한국 가톨릭교회는 정의와 평화, 인간의 존엄성과 인권, 창조의 보전과 같이 인간의 삶에 깊은 영향을 미치는 사회적 현안을 다루기 위해 노력해 왔다. 하지만 종교와 정치의 분리를 내세우며, 교회 특히 성직자와 수도자의 현실 참여를 특정 이념과 결부시켜 비난하는 목소리도 커져왔다. 이 같은 상황은 우리에게 교회의 현실 참여를 어떻게 이해하고 평가할 것인지 다시 한 번 숙고하도록 요청하고 있다. 이 글은 1970년대 한국 교회의 현실 참여의 상징이었던 지학순 주교의 삶을 살펴보면서, 제2차 바티칸공의회의 『교회헌장』과 『사목헌장』이 제시해주는 교회 전망을 검토한다. 그의 삶과 공의회의 교회 전망 사이에서 확인되는 긴밀한 연결고리인 이른바 '그리스도 중심의 원리'는 지학순 주교를 현실 참여로 이끈 신학적 원리로 간주된다. 그리스도 중심의 원리는 현 교황 프란치스코를 이끄는 원리이기도 하며, 그가 취임 이후 강조해 온 교회전망의 바탕이다. 요컨대, 교회의 현실 참여는 노동운동이나 정치와 같은 현실 참여의 영역이 아니라 그리스도 중심의 원리의 준수 여부로 평가되어야 한다. 동시에, 교회의 현실 참여를 지지하는 이들은 자신들의 활동을 이 원리에 비추어 성찰해야 한다. 그럴 때에만, 교회는 그리스도의 성사로 남을 수 있다. 그리스도 중심의 원리는 모든 그리스도인의 삶의 원리가 되어야 한다.

영문 초록

The Korean Catholic church has sought to deal with social issues that have great influence on human life, such as justice and peace, human dignity and rights, and the integrity of creation. However, stressing the separation of religions from politics, voices critical of social participation by the church in general and priests and religious men and women in particular, which are linked to certain ideologies, have been intensified as well. This situation asks us to reconsider how to understand and evaluate the social participation of the church. This essay explores the life of Bishop Tji Hak-soon, a symbolic figure of the social participation of the Korean Catholic church in the 1970s, and it examines the vision of the church the Second Vatican Council presents in Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes. A close link affirmed between his life and the ecclesial vision of the Council, namely, a 'christocentric principle' is regarded as a theological principle that led Bishop Tji into social participation. This christocentric principle is also one that drives the present Pope Francis, and it is a foundation of the vision of the Church that he stresses ever since his inauguration. In sum, the social participation of the Church must be evaluated not by the arena in which social participation takes places such as labor movements or politics but by whether this christocentric principle is complied with. At the same time, those who support social participation must reflect on their activities in the light of this principle. Only in this way, can the Church remain the sacrament of Christ. The christocentric principle must be a principle for the life of all Christians.
