우상파괴를 통한 종교해방

국문 초록

본 논문은 종교의 존재이유를 부정하는 무종교인들이 늘어가는 현실에서 종교인과 무종교인에게 공통적으로 적절한 종교의 의미를 구성하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 무종교인들의 종교 비판에서 핵심 주제인 종교적 우상화의 문제를 집중적으로 분석함으로써 종교인의 신앙을 성찰하고 나아가 무종교인도 공감할 수 있는 종교의 진정성을 향한 길을 찾고자 한다. 구체적으로, 우상화의 문제와 관련하여 일본 선불교의 교토학파를 이끌었던 니시타니의 공 사상과 이보다 앞서 유럽기독교를 비판했던 포이어바흐의 투사이론을 견주면서 재해석하는 방식을 취한다. 우상화가 자기보존본능에 의한 것이니만큼 결국 인간의 자기중심주의에 뿌리를 둔 종교적 현상으로서 자기집착이나 자기도취와 같은 일상적 행태가 그 근본원인임을 드러낸다. 따라서 해결방안은 '자기'의 문제로 귀결될 수밖에 없으니 자기 비움이 우상파괴의 지름길이고 이것이 곧 종교를 우상화의 굴레로부터 해방시켜냄으로써 종교의 본래성을 회복시키는 길이라고 주장한다. 여기서 이들 두 사상가가 서로 다른 종교와 문화적 배경에도 불구하고 비종교화를 통한 종교의 본래성 회복이라는 '종교의 역설'을 갈파하는 공통성을 지닌다는 점을 확인하는 것은 큰 수확이다. 물론 공의 '자체'와 '투사'가 받을 수도 있는 오해가능성에 대한 경계의 필요성 논의도 덧붙인다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this essay is to reconstruct an appropriate meaning of religion for the non-religious as well as the religious, in the context in which the population of the non-religious who deny the meaning of religion grows very rapidly. For this, this essay thoroughly analyzes idolization, which frequently appears in the criticism of religion among the non-affiliated, thereby criticizing the faith of believers, and furthermore, tries to find the way towards the authentication of religion which even the non-affiliated might accept. More concretely, it tries to reinterpret the sunyata thought of Nishitani who leads the Kyoto School in Japanese Zen Buddhism and the projection theory of Feuerbach who criticizes the traditional European Christianity in a conjunctive manner. Since idolatry is driven by the natural instinct of self-preservation, it is evident that the ordinary behaviors such as self-attachment or narcissism in religion are its basic cause. Accordingly, focus is to be placed on the issue of 'self' for solving this problem. It is thus claimed that self-emptying is the way to iconoclasm, and thereby being the method of recovering the authenticity of religion by liberating religion from the bondage of idolatry. Here it is clearly confirmed that both Nishitani and Feuerbach share in common 'the paradox of religion,' namely, the recovery of the genuineness of religion through de-religionizing, in spite of their respective religions and cultures. Also it includes a critique that both thinkers should have prepared for the possible misinterpretation of their key notions such as 'self in sunyata' and 'projection.'
