국문 초록

이 연구는 한국 개신교 근본주의가 어떻게 형성되었고 발전하였는지 살펴본다. 이를 위해 우선 근본주의와 복음주의를 구분하였고 또한 근본주의의 특징을 내적 특징과 외적 특징으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 다음으로 이 연구는 한국 개신교의 근본주의적 특성은 자본주의적 경제 발전으로 편향된 근대화 과정, 한국 전쟁, 다종교 문화, 미국 근본주의의 유입 등 과 같은 사회적, 역사적, 문화적 요소들로 인해 형성되었다는 논의하였다. 이러한 요소들로 인해 한국 개신교 근본주의는 편향된 근대화를 정 당화하면서도 다른 한편으로는 근대성과의 불화를 겪고 있다. 그리고 한국 개신교 근본주의는 전쟁 경험으로 인해 강력한 반공주의 나아가서 레드 콤플렉스를 나타내고 있다. 또한, 한국 개신교 근본주의는 다종교 문화 안에서 개신교의 이익을 위해 정치에 영향력을 행사하거나 투쟁을 전개하여 실질적인 성과를 얻기도 하였다. 나아가서 기독교 정당을 창당하고 의회에 진출하는 직접 정치를 실현하려 한다. 그러나 이러한 한국 개신교 근본주의자들의 정치 시도는 이원론적이고 종말론적인 세계 인식에 기반을 두고 있고 언제나 투쟁을 선택하기 때문에 결국 사회 갈등을 초래한다.

영문 초록

This article discusses how Korean Protestant fundamentalism has been formulated and developed within the historical context of Korean society. First of all, fundamentalism is distinguished from evangelicalism. Then it is characterized in terms of two aspects; internal and external. Then, some social, historical, and cultural factors are discussed. These are the process of modernization biased to capitalistic economic development, the Korean War, multi-religious culture, and the influx of American Protestant fundamentalism. These factors had effects on the formation and development of Korean Protestant fundamentalism. Korean Protestant fundamentalism justified modernization while failing to promote modern values such as rationality. It has fortified a strong anti-communism fever that has developed into a red complex due to the tragic experience of the Korean War and the residual fearfulness of another war. Also, it has procured privileges in religious competition with other forms of Christianity by gaining influence with political powers such as Presidents. Furthermore, Korean Protestant fundamentalists keep founding Christian parties and demand to be members of the National Assembly. These political attempts result in social conflicts rather than social integration. This is because they have chosen struggle and contestation as the base of their dualistic and eschatological worldview.
