국문 초록

본고는 최근 유럽 환경사 연구의 분화적 성장 가운데 특별히 도시환경사로 불리는 연구 분과의 성장에 주목 하여, 관련 연구가 특히 활발히 진행되고 있는 독일어권과 영국을 중심으로 그 세부적 연구주제 및 방법론을 살펴 보고자 한다. 크루첸(Paul J. Crutzen)의 ‘인류세(Anthropocene)’ 테제가 얻은 커다란 반향이 증언하듯이 우리는 환경을 이해하는 데 인간의 집단적 행위에 더욱 주목해야 할 시대에 살고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 도시환경사의 최근 부상은 인류세 시대 진입과 더불어 일어난 환경사의 자연스런 학문적 진화에 가깝다. 집단적 주체로서의 인간의 역량은 근대에 들어와 현저히 도시를 중심으로 형성, 매개, 강화되었다는 점에서 사실상 근대 인간의 영향력을 도시의 영향력과 등치시켜 보아도 무리가 없을 것이다. 이러한 맥락에서 최근 유럽의 도시환경사들 사이의 성찰적 인식, 즉 도시의 공간적 계기가 아니라 사회적 행위자로서의 도시가 연구의 전제가 되어야 한다는 주장은 건설적인 의미를 갖는다. 이러한 새로운 시대적 요청과 궤를 함께 하여 미국과 유럽의 도시환경사가들은 도시의 환경사적 연구의 틀을 기술적인 패러다임으로부터 행위자 중심의 문화적 패러다임으로 바꿈으로써, 그 어느 때보다도 도시의 환경적 전환(urban environmental transition)에서 도시적 의사결정 과정과 사회운동과 같은 광의의 문화적 요인의 중요성을 역설하고 있다.

영문 초록

Considering the differentiated development of recent European environmental history, this paper focuses on the new sub-field called urban environmental history and looks into its distinguished subject matters and various methodologies. This kind of review is especially meaningful for us living in a new age, in which we need to pay a more close attention to human collective activities than ever. From the perspective of the thesis of the Anthropocene by Paul J. Cutzen, the rise of urban environmental history directly reflects the natural academic evolution of environmental history of the Anthropocene. Since the capability of human being as a collective subject has significantly been formed, mediated and intensified through the modern cities, it would not be a total nonsense to equate human influential power with urban power. In this context, the reflective argument of the urban environmental historians that cities should be studied not as a spatial momentum, but as a social actor which has a highly productive meaning. Responding to this epochal request, urban environmental historians are emphasizing the cultural factors like urban decision making or social movement by transforming the research framework from a technology-oriented paradigm into an actor-centered cultural one.
