국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 여행기와 지리서로서의 헤로도토스의 『역사』의 내용을 고찰하는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 여행기로서의 역사의 특성을 사실성, 저술목적, 문학적 여행기와의 차별성의 관점에서 살펴보았다. 그리고 타자인식에 대해서도 살펴보았는데, 먼곳에 위치한 타자의 타자성이 높음을 확인했다. 그리고 그가 언급한 괴물인간은 르네상스 시기까지 아시아와 아메리카 지도에 표현되었다. 『역사』의 지리학적 내용은 조사방법, 지도제작, 그리고 인간과 자연과의 관계를 통해 살펴보았다. 그의 조사방법은 수집한 모든 정보를 자신이 믿지 않더라도 기술하는 것이다. 그는 기하학적 추론에 의한 지도를 거부하고 탐사결과를 근거로 한 지도제작을 제안했다. 그는 나일강과 다뉴브강이 상호 대칭이라고 생각하고, 각 하천을 생활근거지로 하는 주민의 삶을 극단적인 환경결정론적 입장에서 기술했다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the contents of Herodotus’ Histories as travel writing and geographical description. For this, I first looked at the characteristics of history as travel writing from the viewpoint of reliabiliry, purpose of writing, and distinction from literary travelogues. I also looked at otherness, and I found that the otherness located far away were strong. And the monsterous races that he mentioned continued in the maps of Asia and America until the Renaissance period. The geographical aspect was examined through investigation method, mapping, and the relationship between human and nature. His investigation was to report all of the information gathered without necessarily believing it. He refused to map by geometric reasoning and proposed mapping based on the results of the exploration. Assuming that the Nile and the Danube mirror each other, he described the lives of the people tied to each river in an extreme environmentalist perspective.
