국문 초록

최근 전국의 여러 지자체에서 지역의 역사문화 콘텐츠 확보나 정체성 구성 등과 관련해 지명의 역사적 장소성에 주목하는 흐름이 확산되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 조선 후기 제작된 현 대전 지역 관련 고지도를 중심으로 지도상에 재현된 장소 지명이나 경관의 명칭 등에 대한 역사지리적 접근을 시도하였다. 대전 지역은 조선후기 충청도의 회덕현(懷德縣)·진잠현(鎭岑縣) 그리고 공주목(公州牧) 동남부 등 세 지역으로 구성되어 있었기에 이들 군·현의 고지도 상 지명을 총 정리하여 그 유형을 분류하고 필요한 경우 의미 읽기를 시도하였다. 군·현 단위 수준의 고지도 상 지명은 산과 물(水)로 대변되는 자연지명, 행정지명, 군·현의 중심지였던 읍치 관련 지명, 그 외 전통적 공간인식체계인 풍수 관련 지명과 지역사회의 주요한 역사문화경관 지명 등이 주종을 이루었다. 본 연구와 같은 미시적 수준의 역사지리적 지명연구가 타 지역에도 확장되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

In this study, I attempted a historical geographical approach to the place names and landscape names represented on the old maps produced in the late Joseon Dynasty, focusing on the present Daejeon City. The Daejeon area consisted of three districts of Chungcheong Province, namely Hoedeok, Jinjam, and the eastern south of Gongju, in the late Joseon Dynasty. Firstly, I examined the place names and landscape names on the old maps of these areas, and then summed up those names to classify several types of them. And I tried to read the meanings of some names, if necessary, to understand the social relationships in regional communities and the traditional environmental epistemology. As a result, I could identify the several types of the place names and landscape names: natural names related to mountains and streams, names of administrative areas, eupchi-related names which constructed the center of the county, fengshui-related names reflecting the traditional environmental perspectives, and landscape names with the major history and culture of the regional communities. In the near future, it is expected that this kind of the historical geographical approach to the place names at the micro level will extend to other regions.
