국문 초록

본 논문은 두 가지 목적이 있다. 첫째, 현 한국사회 저출산 현상에 대해 행위자의 행위선택 맥락을 이해하고, 이를 바탕으로 새롭게 해석한다. 둘째, 사적이고 친밀한 영역(private-familiar sphere)에서 향유하는/할 수 있는 가치에 대해 이론적으로 고찰한다. 기존연구에서는 저출산 현상의 원인으로 경제적 어려움, 양성평등의식 고양과 개인화에 따른 자기이익 추구 등을 지목한다. 그러나 전반적으로 빈곤에 시달렸던 근대초기에도 결혼･출산･육아는 이어졌다. 또 개인화된 행위자는 왜 가족돌봄보다 직업을 추구하는지, 그 기제는 논의되지 않았다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 첫째, 변화되는 사회･경제적 구조와 조응하는 자아정체성을 매개로 행위자의 행위선택 맥락을 이해한다. 이를 위해, 타인의 인정을 통해 자아를 형성한다는 호네트의 인정이론과 행동 경제학에서 타인과 구별됨과 동시에 사회에 뿌리내린 자아정체성을 의미하는 개성화(individuation) 개념을 고찰한다. 이로부터, 개인적 성취가 사회적 인정을 얻는 가장중요한 기준으로 작동하고 있는 현 한국사회에서, 결혼･출산･육아의 기피란 개인적 성취/직업적 성취를 통해 개성화된 자아정체성을 획득하려는 행위전략임을 해석한다. 둘째, 친밀하고 사적인 영역이 개인의 삶에서 차지하는 기능과 목적을 고찰한다. 이를 위해, 사회경제학에서 이론화한 경제활동의 세 가지 영역과 반 스타베런이 밝힌 각 영역에서 창출되는 가치들을 호네트의 근대사회 세 가지 인정영역과 연결해 논의한다. 이때 개인은 개인적 성취의 영역인 시장영역에선 이익과 불이익에 따라, 법 즉 정치영역에선 명예와 불명예에 따라 인정을 받는다. 그리고 사적이고 친밀한 영역에선 돌봄/애정/사랑의 가치를 향유하며 ‘있는 그대로의 존재’를 인정받아 삶을 번영시킨다. 사회적 위기의 관점에서 저출산에 대해 논의하는 것은 행위자를 반영하지 못한다. 그보다는 지금까지 논의에 기초할 때, 어떻게 개인이 사적이고 친밀한 영역에서 돌봄/애정의 가치를 향유하고 이를 통해 자신 그대로의 자아정체성을 획득하게 할 것인가가 논의의 출발점이 될 수 있다. 한편 이 논문은 개인적 선호로 이해되던 행위선택을 집단 지향성(collective intentionality)으로 이해해 사회성을 포착했다는 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper has two aims. First is to re-interpret the phenomenon of low -birth-rate by understanding the mechanism of behaviour choice. Second is to theorize the values people enjoy/able to enjoy in their private familiar sphere. To do so, this study initially focuses on the behaviour choice of avoiding marriage/ childbirth/ childrearing. The conventional explanations for such behaviour (economic difficulty, increase of gender equality ideology, and individualization) have failed to interpret the high birth rate during the period of severe poverty in the early modern time and why individualization leads to pursuit of career over caring for family. Thus, in order to understand the mechanism of behaviour choice in the interaction between actors and structures, this paper studies Honneth’s theory of recognition and the concept of individuation (separating self from others while being simultaneously embedded in the society) in behaviour economics. By doing so, in the context of Korean society where individual achievement is the central method of receiving recognition, the behaviour of avoiding marriage/ childbirth/ childrearing is a strategic decision aimed towards attaining the self through individual/occupational achievement. Third, in order to analyze the function and purpose of private familiar sphere in individuals, I integrate the three spheres of economic activities and their respective values identified by Van Staveren, with Honneth’s three areas of recognition. At this point, unlike other spheres where the recognition fluctuates due to gain/loss in the market or honour/dishonour in the politics, individuals are able to flourish through recognition of oneself ‘being itself’ while sharing and enjoying care/affection/love in private familiar sphere. Drawing upon hitherto discussion, the discourse about low–birth-rate starts, not from the insight of social crisis, but rather from how individuals are able to conceptualize oneself through enjoying the value of care/affection. The value of this paper lies in capturing ‘the social’ in individual behaviour choice by reconsidering the behaviour choice as a collective intentionality (from the traditional understanding of it as an individual preference).
