국문 초록

본 연구는 여성의 군대 지원 동기를 탐색적으로 살펴보기 위해 여군 장교 11명을 대상으로 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 여성이 군대 지원 동기로서 가장 많이 언급하고 비중을 두는 것은 군대가 “남성적”이라는 사실에 기인한다. 남성의 비율이 높고 가장 “남성적”인 특징을 갖는 조직으로 알려져 있는 군대는 도전 정신이 강하고 호기심이 많은 여성에게 그들의 욕구를 충족시켜 줄 수 있는 최적의 장소이다. 둘째, 국가 혹은 공익에 대한 기여가 여성이 군대를 지원하는 중요한 동기 중 하나이다. 안보의 중요성을 일깨워주는 사건으로부터 직･간접적으로 영향을 받은 경우가 많았고, 국가 혹은 공익에 대해 기여하는 삶이 그렇지 않은 삶보다 가치 있다는 인식을 가지고 있었다. 셋째, 가족의 영향, 경제적 영향은 미미한 것으로 파악되었고, 기타 지원동기에 대해서는 확인할 수 없었다. 본 연구를 통해 도출한 함의 및 정책적 제언은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 여군의 지원동기가 잘 발현될 수 있는 군대 조직을 만들어가야 한다. 둘째, 군대 내 여성 비율이 커짐에 따라 여군의 지원 동기가 변화할 것으로 예상된다. 셋째, 한국적인 맥락에서 여군에 대한 연구 결과 누적 및 이론적 틀의 구축이 필요하다. 본 연구는 질적 방법론을 활용하여 여군의 군대 지원 동기를 살펴보았기 때문에 연구 결과를 일반화 할 수 없다는 한계를 갖는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 쉽게 접근하기 힘든 여군을 대상으로 하여 그들이 왜 군대에 지원했는지에 대해 탐색적인 연구를 했다는 점에서 중요한 의의를 갖는다.

영문 초록

In this study, 11 female officers were interviewed to discover motivation of women to join the military. The results of this study are as follows. First, the motivation to join the military that women mentioned most frequently is based on the quality of the military being “masculine.” The military, which is known for high ratio of men, is the best place for women who are curious and enjoy difficult challenge, to satisfy their desires. Second, an important motivation to join the military is to contribute to the nation and the common good. There are many cases of direct and indirect effects of security incidents, and there was an appreciation of the value of a life that contributes to the nation and common good over one that does not. Third, there was a low influence of family and economics, and other motivations were not found. The implications and policy proposalas are as follows. First, we should develop a military can support motivation of women to join. Second, it is predicted that motivation of women to join the military will change as the ratio of women in the military increase. Third, it is necessary to accumulate study results on women soldiers and to develop a theoretical frame. This study has limitations in that the result can’t be generalized, since it used the qualitative method. Nevertheless, this study is important for discovering the motivation of women soldiers.
