영문 초록

This study made a research on the circumstance till declaration of l Edit de Nantes and the subsequent reaction. And also the relationship between the state and the church was considered on this study. In spite of the conversion of Henri Ⅳ, French domestic situation had been in many difficulties till l Edit de Nantes was declared. Namely, those were the declaration of the expulsion by the popes, the rejection to the King by Extremists of Catholic League and the intervention of Pilippe Ⅱ, Spain Crown. But those problems were settled down due to military merit before l Edit de Nantes. The vatican gave an amnesty to Henri Ⅳ with his promise to accept the laws of the council of Trent. Catholic League leaders became to surrender to Henri Ⅳ by his stick and carrot policy. Spain War ended with Treaty of Vervins. Spain king was suffering from raising war fund by the intervention of England and Netherlands upon the request of Henri Ⅳ. Like this, the kingdom was restoring peace inside and outside of the country. And the religion matter, namely the last and the most important issue became solved by the negotiation between the king and the protestants. As the result of the negotiation, l Edit of Nantes came out and it accepted most of the requests of the protestants. Even though France throne had declared the Catholic as the state religion, the total-destruction for the protestants for the heresy was not declared. Rather than, the protestants were treated as the usual citizens and given the equal civil rights with the limited freedom of the worship in the limited places. Even though they could be considered as the heresy, it was natural that l Edit de Nantes treated the protestants equally with other people, because they should be treated as the citizens of the state whatever they have as their religions. As Henri Ⅳ mentioned in the prologue, l Edit de Nantes was originated to give peace and comfort to France and French people which were tired and falling by the wars. The result from the 30 years civil wars seemed to show that the state must not intervene the religious matters and in other words the churintervene politic matters to restore peace and comfort to the kingdom. Therefore it was no wonder that it s contents were to treat the citizens impartially regardless of their religions, to select the officials unrelated with their religions and to keep watch on the observance and violation of the edicts, not by the religion committee but by the officials of the king. But we can not say that the state could be considered regardless of religion matters or the church. Rather than that, we had better say that the state and the religion are related, when we take a look at the prologue which tells us that the king glorify the God through his keeping the peace in the kingdom and he was used for that purpose. Like this opinion, l Edit de Nantes tells us that the state and the church were related, but it shows that both organizations were recommended not to intervene and infiltrate into their territories each other, because their territories were separated and divided.
