『禮記』 祭禮觀에 나타난 聖王思想의 特性에 대한 연구

국문 초록

先秦儒家의 사상적 흐름은 크게 孔孟계열과 荀學계열로 구분할 수 있다. 戰國末期의 儒家는 이러한 두 사상을 통합하여, 통일왕조에 걸맞는 사상과 정치체계를 구축하였는데, 그 중 하나가 聖王思想이며 그 양상을 확인할 수 있는 것이 祭禮觀이다. 따라서 『禮記』의 祭禮觀에 나타난 聖王思想에 대한 연구는 戰國末期 이후 儒家思想의 특징을 규명하는 작업이다. 德治主義에 바탕을 둔 聖王思想은 군왕 본인의 도덕적 실천을 통해 사회안정을 추구하였다. 祭禮에 있어서도 祭祀라는 儀式적 행위를 君權의 강화와 계급체제의 확립에 목적을 두지 않고, 부모에 대한 孝意識을 확장한 것으로 설명한다. 이것은 군왕 본인이 제사를 통해 자신의 善을 자발적으로 실천하기 위해 孝를 행하고, 그것을 통치영역으로 확장해야 한다는 사상이다. 또 祭禮의 목적을 爲民에 두어 신들의 祭需 흠향 여부를 군왕의 정책이 백성들을 위한 것이냐에 달려 있다고 강조한다. 뿐만 아니라 祭禮 자체를 先王이 자연의 운행원리와 인간의 정감에 기초하여 제작한 것으로 격상시키고, 이처럼 만들어진 禮制는 절대적인 가치를 지니므로 현재 제위에 오른 군왕은 이를 준수해야 한다고 강조하는데, 이것은 군왕 본인이 祭禮라는 규범을 준수하여, 자신의 도덕성을 발현해야 한다는 것을 나타낸다. 이것은 『禮記』의 祭禮觀에 나타난 聖王思想적 특징이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to draw conceptual characteristics of shengwang(聖王) through perspectives on jili(祭禮) shown in the Liji(禮記) and explore viewpoints on junwang(君王) in the Liji. Liji is a core text to study jili in that it describes the prototype of ancient jili and its meaning, and jili represents a major part of lixue(禮學). Streams of pre-Qin Confucianism can be mainly classified as the Kong Meng(孔孟) school and the Xunxue(荀學) school. In the end of Warring States period, the Confucian school integrated the thoughts of two schools and then built systems of philosophy and politics for the united empire. One of them is the thought on shengwang and the perspectives on jili are to examine its practical aspects by interpreting ritual aspects and their meanings of jili. Therefore, a study on the thought on shengwang shown on the viewpoints on jili of the Liji is also to explore the philosophical characteristics of Confucian thoughts after the end of Warring States period. The thought on shengwang based on the principle of governance-by-virtue maintains that junwang should be a model example and his own moral practices can bring social stability. In other words, this idea admits authority of the rulers but also focuses on their duties to influence the common people to act morally and encourage them to voluntarily practice ritual systems through their initiative. Such thought on shengwang explains the sacrificial rite, a ritualistic act of jili, as the expanded filial piety towards parents, not for strengthening the power of the rulers and establishing class system. This is a thought to encourage the rulers to perform deeds and filial piety by holding sacrificial rites and expand them to ruling the empire. This also put the goal of jili on living for the people(weimin 爲民) and then emphasize whether spirits are entertained by sacrifice depends on whether the ruler’s policy is for the people. Besides, jili itself was upgraded to be made by xianwang(先王) based on nature’s operating principles and human emotions. The ritual system made by this process has an absolute value and therefore it was emphasized that the present ruler has to follow it. It represents that ruler himself has to comply with norm of jili and manifest his own morality. This is the characteristics of the thought on shengwang shown on the viewpoints on jili of the Liji.
