주자의 성학 실현 공부에 대한 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 성리학을 집대성한 주자가 제시한 성학 실현 수양공부 방법에 대한 특성을 분석하여, 인성함양 교육의 이론토대를 제공하는데 목적이 있다. 주자는 사람이면 누구나 성학의 근거인 ‘明德’을 품부 받고 태어나, 도덕적 사고와 행위를 할 수 있다고 보았다. 명덕에는 마음 [心] 과 [性] 이 합일되어 있고, 앎 [知]과 실천 [行] 이 일치되고 자기 [己] 와 타인 [人] 이 일체를 이룰 수 있는 근거가 내재되어 있기 때문이다. 그는 성학 실현의 방법으로 內聖의 修己공부와 外王의 治人공부를 제시하였다. 수기의 미발 공부는 심 측면에서 고요한 가운데 본심을 보존하는 공부 [靜中存心] 와 성 측면에서 움직이는 가운데 본성을 함양하는 공부 [動中養性] 이고, 수기의 이발 공부는 지 측면에서 사물의 이치를 탐구하고 앎을 지극히 하는 공부 [格物致知] 와 행 측면에서 뜻을 참되게 하고 마음을 바르게 하는 공부 [誠意正心] 이다. 치인의 추행 공부는 기 측면에서 스스로를 새롭게 하는 공부 [自新] 와 인 측면에서 백성을 새롭게 하는 공부 [新民] 이다. 명덕을 함양하여 도덕적 인격을 완성하고, 명덕을 확충하여 도덕적 사회를 구축하는 것은 주자가 수양 공부를 통해 도달하고자 했던 성학의 궁극적 이상이었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to provide the theoretical basis of character education for children and adolescents by analyzing the methodology of self-cultivation of Sage Learning that Zhuxi presented in Daxuezhangju, which is a comprehensive compilation of neo-Confucianism. Zhuxi thought that every human being is capable of moral thinking and behavior because everyone has the innate ability of the ‘Illustrious Virtue (明德) ’ as the foundation of Sage Learning even though the person is not exposed to any education and experience. The Illustrious Virtue (性體) is the Original Nature which is the essence of Nature (本然之性) , and the Original Mind (心體) , which is the essence of the Mind (本心) . When the Illustrious Virtue is manifested, people are capable of moral thinking and behavior of their own accord without even making a conscious effort. It is because the Illustrious Virtue is complete with mind (心) and nature (性) in unity knowledge (知) and practice (行) in harmony, and the self (己) and others·in concord. Zhuxi argued that in order to cultivate oneself (修己) , it is necessary to study Motion (動) and Rest (靜) in the state of the Unmanifest Mind and study knowledge (知) and practice (行) in the state of the Manifest Mind; and in order to learn how to govern the people (治人) , it is required to study the Essence and Utilities·when one applies what one has learned to the outer world. Cultivating oneself before the Mind is manifested pertains to studying Rest of the Mind and studying Motion of the Nature, whereas cultivating oneself after the Mind is manifested pertains to studying Ge Wu Zhi Zhi (格 物致知) concerning knowledge (知) and studying Cheng Yi Zheng Xin (誠意正心) concerning practice (行) . It is the ideal of Zhuxi’s theory of Sage Learning (聖學) he wanted to attain that people achieve moral character by cultivating the Illustrious Virtue and build a moral society by expanding the Illustrious Virtue.
