고등학교 한국지리 교과서에 기술된 동해 표기 내용의 개선 방향

국문 초록

한국과 북한은 1992년 국제회의에서 국제적으로 통용되고 있는 일본해 표기의 부당성과 함께 동해 표기의 정당성을 본격적으로 주장했다. 이후 한국과 일본에서는 동해/일본해 표기를 둘러싼 정치적 갈등이 발생하고 있다. 그리고 로컬과 글로벌 스케일에서는 일반인들의 지명 분쟁도 지속되고 있다. 이런 가운데 최근 간행된 고등학교『한국지리』교과서에는 독도주권과 함께 동해 표기 문제가 구체적으로 기술되었다. 그러나 여러 종류의 검정 교과서에는 다양한 오류가 다수 보이는데, 필자는 이들에 대해서 시정 방안을 제시했다. 주요 오류 사항은 연도 및 연대, 바다 명칭의 해석, 일본해의 확산 및 정착 시기, 일본해 정착의 계기, 분쟁 관련 내용, 시각 자료의 혼란 등이다. 그리고 교과서의 내용은 동해 지명의 역사성, 동해 병기의 정당성이 중점적으로 기술되어 있다. 이와 관련하여 필자는 향후 동해 지명의 역사성은 종래 고대 중심에서 근대 중심으로, 동해 병기의 정당성은 국제기구의 권고 중심에서 지명의 정체성 중심으로 개선할 것을 제안했다.

영문 초록

South Korea and North Korea insisted on the legitimacy of the East Sea naming along with the unfairness of the Sea of Japan naming, internationally recognized, at the 1992 international conference. Since then, political conflicts have occurred around the naming of the East Sea/Sea of Japan in both Korea and Japan. In addition, on the local and global scale, the general public’s disputes over the naming are continuing. Recently, the high school Hanguk Jiri (Korean Geography) textbook has described the problem of the East Sea naming along with the sovereignty of Dokdo. However, as most of the authorized textbooks contain many kinds of errors, this study suggests corrective direction about them. The main errors include years and ages, interpretation of sea names, times of proliferation and settlement of the Sea of Japan, causes of the settlement of the Sea of Japan, contents connected with conflicts, confusion over visual aids, and others. The contents of the textbooks focus on the history of the East Sea naming and the legitimacy of dual name usage. In this respect, it is suggested that the history of the East Sea naming in the future needs to be improved from the ancient to the modern focus, and the legitimacy of the dual name usage of the East Sea needs to be improved based on the identity of the name of place rather than on the recommendation of the international organization.
