탄광서사를 통해 본 산업 폐허와 기억의 정치

국문 초록

이 글은 강원남부탄광지역의 폐광촌과 관련된 탄광서사를 중심으로 ‘산업 폐허’를 재현하는 관점과 이를 토대로 형성된 ‘기억하기의 정치’를 문학지리학적 관점에서 논의했다. 폐광촌은 근대산업화가 낳은 다양한 산업 폐허들 중 하나로서, 국가주도로 전개된 한국사회의 압축적 근대화와 산업화의 문제점들이 응집되어 있는 장소라는 점에서 주목을 요한다. 산업 폐허들은 탈근대적 맥락에서 새로운 미학적, 윤리적, 정치적 물음의 대상으로 부각되고 있다. 최근 발표되는 다양한 형식의 탄광서사들은 기존의 탄광서사 내부에서 말해지지 않은, 주변부화되어 왔던 존재들의 삶의 실천과 흔적들, 기억들을 현대적 관점에서 재구성하고 있다. ‘폐허’로 변해버린 탄광촌을 폐허의 정동과 사유로 새롭게 환기시키고, 기존의 제도적, 규범적 탄광서사의 기억경관과는 다른 맥락에서, 폐허 속에서 그동안 억압되었던 ‘다른’ 기억들과 느낌들을 제시하고 있다. 이러한 대항-기억의 생산은 폐광촌을 산업적 용도를 다한 폐기된 공간이 아니라, 새로운 정동들을 창출하는 장소로 재구성한다. 도시의 바깥이나 주변부 지역에서 폐허화가 진행되는 장소들에 대한 고찰로서 ‘폐허의 지리학’이 필요하다.

영문 초록

In this paper, I highlight how the ambiguous and uncanny atmosphere of industrial ruins can question and contest the dominant ways in which the commonality of memory is constructed in the post-mining city such as Taebaek and Jeongseon. The question is how post-mining ruins can disorder an eloquent modern nation-state narrative and produce multiple narratives within singular voices in remembering. Using the allegories of the ruins, some writers interrogate the normative ways of remembering that constructs the modern industrial (mining) places as rhetorical monumental spaces and also produces the spatial homogeneity through urban regulation and commercialization. Unlike ordinary processes of social-commercial remembering, their works offer the possibility of counter-memories as well as the different and nuanced narratives which can produce the heterogeneity and multiplicities unconnected with myths of modern industrial mining. In this respect, it must be understood that reremembering the ruins inevitably associates with an ethics and politics about encountering and understanding the other.
