국문 초록

김창룡은 충청남도 서천 출신의 판소리 명창으로, 20세기 전반 전통음악계를 대표하였던 근대 5명창의 한 사람이다. 그는 ‘김성옥 - 김정근’으로 이어지는 뿌리 깊은 중고제 판소리의 맥을 이은 인물로, 판소리사에서 그가 차지하는 위치와 의미는 매우 크다. 그의 판소리는 전라도 지역에서 전승된 판소리인 동편제ㆍ서편제와는 사설 및 음악 스타일에서 확연한 차이를 보인다. 그러나 그간 김창룡이 보유하였던 소리에 대한 음악적 연구는 그다지 진척을 보지 못하였다. 이에, 본고에서는 김창룡이 20세기 전반 SP음반에 남긴 심청가 대목을 중심으로, 그의 판소리에서 나타나는 대목의 구성ㆍ사설ㆍ음악적인 특징을 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 김창룡의 판소리 심청가는 동편제나 서편제의 여타 바디와는 다른 독특한 대목 전개와 사설적 특징을 보였다. 그리고 그에게 나타난 독특한 특징들 중 일부는 중고제 심정순 바디와 통하는 측면을 보임으로서, 중고제 판소리 바디로서의 뚜렷한 정체성을 드러낸다. 음악적으로는 2소박 6박의 빠른 템포의 진양조장단(일명 세마치)을 빈번하게 사용하는 등 장단의 운용에서 차이를 보였다. 특히 하나의 사설주기(4.4조)를 한 장단에 정확히 배치하지 않는 엇붙임 형태를 자주 사용하였는데, 이는 장단과는 무관하게 자유자재로 소리하는 예전 판소리의 특징으로 해석할 수 있다. 선율은 도약진행이 없이 순차진행하고, 평조와 우조ㆍ계면조 등 악조에 관계없이 선율이 하행하여 종지하는 경우가 빈번하였다. 또한, 평조에서는 Sol음뿐 아니라 re음도 요성하는 경우가 많았다. 선율에서 나타나는 이와 같은 특징들은 20세기 중고제 판소리 창자인 심정순과 심상건의 소리에서도 발견되었던 것으로, 경기ㆍ충청 지역의 기층음악어법이 판소리에 수용된 것이라 하겠다. 정리하면, 김창룡의 심청가는 전체 구성이나 사설, 음악적인 면에서 그만의 독특한 특징들을 보유하고 있다. 그리고 그가 가진 독특함 중 일부는 경기ㆍ충청 지역의 중고제 판소리의 특징이면서, 고(古)제의 특징에 해당한다. 즉, 김창룡의 소리에 드러나는 좀 더 예스런 형태는, 오늘날 판소리에는 존재하지 않는 19세기 중후반의 판소리 모습을 고찰하는 데 귀한 자료가 된다.

영문 초록

Kim Chang-ryong was a pansori master singer born in Seocheon, Jungnam, and is one of modern five master singers representing traditional music in the 20th century. Kim, whose position in pansori history is significant, continued the deep-rooted tradition of Junnggoje pansori being passed down from Kim Seong-ok to Kim Jeong-geun. His pansori style is definitely different from that of Dongpyeonje (Eastern style) and Seopyeonje (Western style) that were prominent in the Jeolla region in terms of lyrics and musical style. With this background, in this study, based on his performance of the Tale of Shimcheong, his pansori characteristics will be considered. Kim’s version of Shimcheong show lyric expressions that are different from that of Dongpyeonje or Seopyeonje and his lyrics feature unique characteristic. Some of his characteristics are similar to the body of work known as Junggoje Shimjeongsun, therefore his pansori has a definite identity with the Junggoje pansori. Musically speaking, it shows different rhythm play in that it frequently uses a fast jinyang rhythm with 2-weak beats within the 6-beat rhythmic pattern. In particular, in Kim’s pansori, he would not exactly arrange a four word lyric cycle with what should have been its four-beat rhythmic cycle; thus we can see that a characteristic of early pansori was singing freely, regardless of the rhythm. In many cases, the melody did not follow the normal conventions that were common to pyeongjo, ujo, or gyemyeonjo (various melodic modes); additionally, sol as well as re were sung with vibrations common to pyeongjo. Kim’s melody characteristics can be found in that of Shim Jeong-Sun and Shim Sang-geon, who were both 20th century Junggoje pansori singers, as well as the musical style of Gyeonggi (the area around Seoul), rather than the southern area as was more common. In brief, we could find unique characteristic in Kim Chang-ryong’s pansori in terms of general composition, lyrics, musical style and some of his uniqueness has a relation with characteristics of Junggoje of Gyeonggi as well as the Chungcheong region of old-style Pansori. That is to say, that the older style of his pansori is a valuable source for considering the genre’s characteristics in the middle to late 19th century that are hard to find in contemporary pansori.
