임소향의 전통예술 활동 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 근대예술에 일조한 여성예술인 임소향(林素香)이 월북하기 전인 1930~40년대에 창극(唱劇)과 판소리, 춤, 음반과 라디오방송 등 전통예술 활동에 대해 살펴보고, 그 특징과 의미에 대해 연구하였다. 우선, 임소향의 생몰 연도를 점검해 보았을 때, 출생연도는 1918년 10월 22일이며 한국 나이로 표기된 점은 동일(同一)하나, 사망 시기에 있어서 차이가 있었다. 기존의 1978년이 아닌 1990년 이후까지 살아있었다는 정황이 파악되었다. 출신 지역은 경상북도 성주군 초전면 대장리로 추정되며, 대구 달성권번(達城券番)을 거쳐 조선권번(朝鮮券番)에서 학습하였다. 박지홍(朴枝洪)을 비롯한 정정렬(丁貞烈), 조상선(趙相鮮), 정남희(丁南希) 그리고 당시 ‘판소리 5명창’을 비롯한 ‘여류 8명창’에 영향을 받았다. 또한, 춤에 영향을 받은 스승은 한성준으로 임소향은 그의 수양딸이기도 하다. 임소향의 전통예술 활동은 경성방송국(京城放送局)과 음반, 신문자료에 나오는 단체에 속해서 했던 공연 활동, 춤 활동으로 축약할 수 있다. 임소향의 경성방송국에서의 활동은 이례적으로 ‘세적’ 악기를 연주하는 것으로부터 시작한다. 창극조(唱劇調)와 단가(短歌), 남도잡가(南道雜歌)와 민요(民謠), 시조(時調) 등의 다양한 음악 활동을 라디오방송을 통해 알 수 있었다. 여기에서 임소향의 고수는 총 5명이 있는데, 정원섭(丁元燮)과 가장 많은 호흡을 맞췄다. 임소향이 녹음한 음반은 대다수 유성기음반(SP)이고, 단체 및 개인 음반을 취입하였다. 음반사는 Polydor의 정규반과 보급반, Vitor, Bam 등이 있으며, 총 75종에 이른다. 음반에서 고수는 모두 한성준(韓成俊)이 담당하였다. 신문에 나오는 공연 활동은 창극 공연 활동이 대부분인데, 조선성악연구회(朝鮮聲樂硏究會)에서 했던 활동이 가장 많았다. 창극에서 그녀의 배역이 가지는 특징은 중년 여성의 해학적인 연기와 굵은 통성의 소리를 지녔다는 것이다. 또한, 임소향이 춤 실력도 뛰어났다는 증언을 통해 춤꾼으로의 면모도 확인하였다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the traditional performance arts activities, such as traditional changgeuk (Korean opera), pansori (solo narrative singing), traditional dance, and radio broadcast, from the 1930 to 1940s before Lim So-hyang, a female artist who contributed to modern art, defected to North Korea during the Korean War. It also analyzes the characteristics and significance of traditional performing arts. When Lim So-hyang’s birth and death date were examined, her birth date (October 22, 1918) was consistently recorded, but there are differences regarding her death date. Contrary to popular belief that Lim died in 1978, it has been determined that Lim was alive even after 1990. It is assumed that she was born in Daejang-ri Chojeon-myeon Seongju-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do and that she studied at a Joseon Dynasty Gisaeng Entertainment Society after studying at the gisaeng entertainment society in Daegu. She was influenced by the so-called “Eight Famous Master Singers of Pansori,” including the “Five Master Singers of Pansori,” comprised of Park Ji-hong, Jeong Jeong-ryul, Cho Sang-seon, and Jeong Nam-hui. Furthermore, Han Seong-jun not only influenced Lim as a dance teacher, but she was also his foster daughter. Lim So-hyang’s traditional arts activities can be estimated by an examination of the dance and performance activities that she did when she was affiliated with the association that appeared on Gyeongseong broadcasts, record albums, and in the press. Lim’s Gyeongseong broadcasting activity started extraordinarily with the playing of a “pipe” (piri) instrument. Through radio broadcasts, we are also aware that she participated in changgeuk (Korean opera), danga (a short version of pansori), namdo japga (southern folk songs sung by professionals), minyo (folk songs), and sijo (classical three-verse sung poetry). While she studied under five masters, she mainly worked with Jung Won-seob. Most of her recordings were on gramophone records; she recorded both as an individual and in groups. There are a total 75 record companies, including Victor, BAM, and Polydor’s regular class and transition class. All of the records were mastered by Han Seong-jun. The performance activities that were shown in the newspaper were mostly changgeuk, in conjunction with the Choseon Changgeuk Research Association. Lim’s role in changgeuk is characterized as portraying witty middle-aged woman that she had a deep voice. She was identified as a good dancer through testimonies about her dance skills.
