국문 초록

연사례는 오래전부터 유가문화에서 중시되었던 사례(射禮)로서, 『주례』, 『논어』, 『맹자』, 『통전』 등의 문헌에 등장한다. 대사례ㆍ빈사례ㆍ연사례의 삼사례(三射禮) 중 조선에서는 대사례와 연사례를 구분하지 않고 통틀어서 대사례를 행하였다. 고례회복에 힘쓰던 정조는 이를 바로잡기 위해 1779년과 1783년 두 차례에 걸쳐 연사례를 시행하였고 향후의 연사례를 위해 「연침음사의주」를 마련해두었다. 정조는 연사례를 통해 무(武)를 예악(禮樂)으로 승화시켜 군신 간의 화합을 도모하였다. 연사례의 시행은 또한 정조가 지속적으로 추구했던 고제(古制)와 고악(古樂) 회복의 뜻을 보여준다. 정조와 그의 지악지신(知樂之臣)인 서명응의 고제와 고악 추구는 맹목적이지 않았다. 그들은 옛 제도의 본질과 의미를 지키되 현실에 맞는 유연성을 발휘하여 연사례 의식절차와 음악을 마련하였다.

영문 초록

Yeonsa-rye is an archery ceremony that has been valued since ancient times in Confucian culture. Traditionally, there were three archery ceremonies, called Daesa-rye, Binsa-rye, and Yeonsa-rye. During the Choseon Dynasty, Daesa-rye and Yeonsa-rye became integrated and were not distinguished from each other. To adjust to this, King Jeongjo executed Yeonsa-rye two times (in 1779 and 1783). And he also commanded that documents be made about the order of the ceremony. Through Yeonsa-rye, King Jeonjo tried to sublimate martial arts to culture and create harmony between he and his officers. The implementation of Yeonsa-rye displays the preference of King Jeongjo toward the restoration of old ceremonial systems and music. That is, King Jeongjo and Seo Myoung-eung (an official who was well-versed in music) did not unconditionally pursue the old system. Rather, they arranged the ceremony and music with flexibility, while at the same time kept the essential meanings of old ceremonial system.
