《 차가운 밤 》 의 쩡수셩의 곤경을 통해 상상해본 이상적 성별질서

국문 초록

본고는 바진의 현실주의의 대표작으로 손꼽히는 《차가운 밤》에 대해 첫째, 봉건윤리와 개인주의 관념의 대립이라 보여지는 왕원쉬안의 모친과 쩡수성의 갈등 양상을 살펴보고, 둘째, 쩡수성이 처한 상황을 통해 1940년대 중국 지식여성의 출로를 살펴보았다. 셋째, 이 작품이 탄생한 지 70여 년이 지난 지금 쩡수성과 같은 직업여성이 압도적으로 증가한 현대사 회에서 성별 질서는 어떠한 것이 되어야 할지 생각해 보았다. 이 작품의 주인공들의 승리에 대한 갈망은 곧 삶의 질서의 회복에 대한 갈망이었으나 승리가 가져온 것은 결코 이상적 질서의 회복이 아니었다. 《차가운 밤》의 절망은 바로 이 점에 기인한 것이다. 그러나 바로 이러한 절망 속에서 사람들은 당연히 사회를 바꾸고 제도를 바꾸어야 한다는 새로운 역사적 요구를 도출해낼 수 있었으니 중일전쟁 종료 후 중국의 현대사는 어쩌면 이에 대한 증명이라 할 것이다. 현재 중국 직업여성들이 처한 곤경은 쩡수성이 처한 곤경의 연장선상으로 보인다. 이를 해소하기 위해서는 “첫째, 국가가 가정정책을 수립하여 직업여성에게 우호적인 업무환경을 만들어줄 것과 둘째, 불평등할 성별관계를 변화시켜 남녀가 공동으로 양육과 교육을 책임지는 성별문화를 만들어나갈 것”이 요구된다. 이와 같이 돌봄노동에 남성들이 정당한 몫을 분담하여 참여한다면, 여가시간을 평등하게 하는 데 훨씬 더 가까워질 것이고 남성중심주의를 제거하여 훨씬 더 젠더정의에 다가설 것이다.

영문 초록

Through the analysis of Cold Nights, regarded as the masterpiece of Ba Jin s take on realism, this paper aims to present three aspects. First, it will delve into the conflict between the mother of Wang Wenxuan and Zeng Shusheng, which also represents the conflict between feudalism and individualism. Second, the paper analyzes the escape of a female intellectual in 1940s through the situation Zeng Shusheng goes through. Finally, it reflects upon gender norms suitable for the current modern society, seventy years after since the story was introduced and in which more working women, like Zeng Shusheng, are prevalent. The main characters yearning for victory was an yearning for a restoration of order in their lives but the story does not present restoration of an ideal order. The devastation in Cold Nights is a result of the failure. Nevertheless, since the plot evolves to present a new historical demand among people for a change in their society and also institutional reforms amidst such devastation, the story also serves to be proof of Chinese Modern history after the Second Sino-Japanese War. The current dilemma of modern Chinese working women seems to be an extension of the difficulties faced by Zeng Chusheng. To alleviate these burdens, the story demands, “First, the state needs to implement a family-oriented policy to create a work environment amenable for working women. Second, the state needs to introduce a cultural norm through reducing gender inequalities so that men and women take responsibility of child care and education.” If men take their role to nurture their children, then women will also have time to utilize more time for leisure and tackle male-oriented gender norms to achieve gender justice.
