민요에서의 ‘아리’ 사용 양상과 아리랑의 범주 확장

국문 초록

우리가 흔히 ‘아리랑’이라 부르는 노래는 ‘아리랑’을 후렴구로 부르는 노래를 지칭한다. 그러나 ‘아리랑’이라는 후렴구는 19세기 말에 등장하는 것으로 그 이전의 악곡에서는 ‘아리랑’보다는 ‘아리’라는 단어가 더 자주 발견된다. 아리랑이나 아리의 의미에 대해서는 온갖 설이 난무하다. 하지만 음악학의 입장에서 ‘아리’의 대해 정리한 바 없다. 따라서 이 글에서는 민요에서의 ‘아리’가 어떻게 나타나고 있는지 살펴보고, ‘아리’와 아리를 둘러싼 민요의 존재 양상을 통해 아리랑을 어떤 방향으로 전승해 나갈 것인지에 대해 논의해보았다. ‘아리’라는 단어는 여러 지역 민요의 악곡명에서 사용된다. 각 지역의 아리에서 음악적 공통점이 분명하게 드러나지 않으나 지역의 특성에 맞는 느린 속도의 악곡으로 이해할 수 있다. 그리고 여기에 서용된 ‘아리’의 의미는 민요를 지시하는 고유 용어로서의 ‘소리’를 말하는 것이므로 ‘아리’는 민요를 지칭하는 대명사라 확대해석할 수 있다. 그렇다면 아리랑의 범주는 더 확장하여 적용될 수 있다고 본다. 아리랑을 특정 악곡에만 한정하면 시대를 넘어서는 변화무쌍한 아리랑 문화를 살릴 수 없게 된다. 아리랑은 감정을 표현하는 민족적 고유성을 담보한 음악모국 어인 ‘아리’에서 출발한 노래이며, 여전히 ‘아리’의 한 형태이기 때문이다. 따라서 우리가 아리랑이라 지칭해 왔던 것을 협의의 아리랑이라 한다면 광의적 의미의 아리랑은 ‘소리’라 불리는 민요 전체를 포함할 수 있으며, 이러한 인식 아래에 음악적 모국어로서의 민요 운동이 필요하다고 본다.

영문 초록

What is often call arirang is a song that has arirang as the chorus. However, the chorus arirang became prevalent since the end of 19th century, and the songs predating that has ari more frequently. There are numerous rumors about the meaning of arirang and ari. However, ari has not been yet examined in musicology. Therefore, this paper examined how ari appeared in folksongs. Through the existence aspect of folksongs around ari , the direction to transmit arirang is discussed. Firstly, the word ari should be looked up among the names of folksongs. Secondly, sori is a indigenous term meaning folksongs. Norae is a fixed, formal song while sori is a musical language that can be selected and changed flexibly by the singer. If the suggested formula is verified, the category of arirang should be reset. Arirang should not be confined to certain songs. Arirang is a song which originated from ari which is a musical first language that secures national identity to express emotion and is still one kind of ari . Therefore, what has been referred to as arirang is arirang in the narrow sense while arirang in the broad sense can include all folksongs that are called sori . Arirang is designated as an intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO. Before its designation, the efforts to widen the transmission of arirang is led by the government under the title of the song of Koreans . In planning the business of arirang and transmitting arirang, we should look beyond arirang as a folksongs. With a few songs as materials and goals, it is difficult to plan a sustainable and meaningful project. There should be efforts to reflect the nature of arirang and transmit it.
