명량대첩(鳴梁大捷)과 진도(珍島)

국문 초록

진도는 오랜 역사동안 외부의 적으로부터 국가를 구하고자 충성심(忠誠心)을 발휘하는 훌륭한 장수들이 많은 호국의 고장이다. 고려 때는 반외세 자주 국가 건설을 위해 삼별초들이 승화후 온을 왕으로 추대하여 진도 용장산성 안에 고려왕국을 건설하고 대몽항쟁을 벌였을 때도 진도군민들은 모두 합심하여 삼별초군을 도왔다. 또한, 조선이 일본에게 침략을 받아 7년 전쟁을 벌일 때 가장 중요한 명량대첩에서도 진도군민들은 모두 혼연일체(渾然一體)가 되어 이순신장군을 중심으로 하는 수군들에게 적극 협력하였다. 그래서 이순신장군의 많은 기록에서 “진도”와 “벽파정” 그리고 “벽파진”이라는 단어를 쉽사리 찾아낼 수 있다. 그러니까 이순신장군이 명량대첩을 전후로 하여 중심으로 인식했던 바다는 바로 진도에 있는 벽파 앞바다였다. 그 사실은 이순신장군이 직접 기록한 난중일기와 선조실록을 자세히 살펴보아도 알 수 있을 뿐 아니라 그 후대 명량대첩의 대승리를 기념하기 위해 1688년에 대제학 이민서에 의해 씌여진 명량대첩비의 첫 문장에서도 금방 알아차릴 수 있다. 본고는 사료(史料)를 중심으로 명량대첩에서 진도와 진도군민들이 얼마나 중요한 역할을 했으며 진도 부녀자들이 강강술래를 이용하여 망금산 아래에서 이순신장군의 전략전술을 위해 어떤 헌신적인 노력을 기울였는지 심도있게 분석해 보고자 한다. 한편, 벽파정이 명량대첩의 대승리를 위해 얼마나 중요한 전략적 요새였으며 이순신장군의 모든 리더십과 아이디어가 집결된 곳인지에 대해 새로운 인식의 전환이 필요하다는 입장을 견지하기 위하여 고증적 자료를 제시하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Jin Island has been the town of national defense producing many great generals that acted on their true loyalty to save the nation from enemies. During the Goryeo Dynasty Sambyeolchos tried to throne Seunghwahu Ohn in an attempt to build an independent country fighting back against foreign influences and created the Goryeo Kingdom inside the Yongjang mountain fortress in the island. In their resistance against the Mongol dynasty did the village people of the island join to drive them off the country. During the Choseon Dynasty the people of Jin Island were united together and offered full cooperation to the naval forces led by Admiral Lee Sun-shin in Myeongrangdaecheop, one of the most crucial combats in the Seven Year War waged by the Japanese. That s the reason you can easily spot such words as Jin Island, Byeokpajeong and Byeokpajin in his documents during the wartime. Centered around his awareness before and after Myeongrangdaecheop was the offing of Byeokpa of the island. That fact is confirmed by the Nanjung Journals by the admiral and the true records during the reign of King Seonjo. Another proof is the first sentence from the monument of Myeongrangdaecheop written by Daejehak Lee Min-seo in 1688 to commemorate the huge victory. This study set out to examine how important roles Jin Island and its residents played in Myeongrangdaecheop and how devoted they were to help the admiral carry out his strategies and tactics based on historical records.
