영문 초록

This paper analyzes the effects of imported automobiles’ entry into the Korean automobile market. For this purpose, we estimated a structural model of automobile demand pricing and used it to simulate the effects. We found that the entry of imported automobiles increased net social welfare, as the increase in consumer welfare more than offset the decrease in incumbent firms’ profits. In particular, it was found that the increase in consumer welfare was mainly attributable to an increase in brand variety rather than to competitive market prices.
