기업 규모와 국제 출원 특허의 특성 간의 관계

국문 초록

기업의 점진적인 국제화와 이를 위한 본국의 성장 기반을 강조하던 과거 연구들과 달리 대기업과 중소기업의 국제화 방안의 차이에 대한 연구가 최근 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구는 첨단 기술 기업의 국제화 전략을 대변하는 국제 특허 활동에 초점을 맞추어 국제 출원 특허의 특성과 기업 규모 간의 관계를 실증 분석한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 국제 출원 특허의 특성으로 특허 개발에 투입된 자원의 양, 특허 개발을 위한 협력, 그리고 특허가 이전 특허들에 비해 얼마나 새로운 지식을 내포하는지를 나타내는 급진성을 제시한다. 한국 제약 산업을 대상으로 실증 분석한 결과 국제 특허 개발에 투입된 자원이 많을수록 해당 특허는 중소기업에 의해 출원되었을 가능성이 작아졌다. 그리고 국제 특허가 협력을 통해 개발됐거나 자사의 이전 특허들보다 급진적일수록 이 특허는 중소기업에 의해 출원될 가능성이 커지는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

Although previous studies have emphasized the gradual internationalization of firms and their growth base in home countries for this internationalization, theoretical efforts have recently been made to demonstrate how the internationalization of SMEs differs from that of large firms. By focusing on international patenting representing the internationalization strategies of high-tech firm, this study examines the relationship between the characteristics of internationally filed patents and the size of applicant firms. This study suggests three characteristics of international patents: the amount of firm resources invested in the development of international patents, cooperation for this development, and their radicalness indicating how much new knowledge they have in relation to previous ones. Based on the Korean pharmaceutical industry, the empirical results show that international patents are less likely to be filed by SMEs as more resources are invested in the development of these patents. It is also found that as international patents are more radical or if cooperation is conducted for the development of these patents, they are more likely to be filed by SMEs.
