국문 초록

이 논문은 한국 학계에서 최근 논쟁이 된 『글로벌 지식장과 상징폭력』(2015)이라는 저작을 중심으로, 글로벌 지식장에서 헤게모니적 지위를 누리고 있는 서구 사회과학과 한국 사회과학의 관계 맺기에 대한 비판적 논의를 하고자 한다. 이러한 맥락에서, 이 논문은 『글로벌』의 비판적 읽기를 통해서 한국 안팎에서 패권적 지위를 유지하는 서구 주류 사회과학지식/학계에 대하여 한국 사회과학자들의 어떻게 관계를 맺어왔으며, 맺어야 하는가라는 질문을 다루고자 한다. 『글로벌』은 설명적 이론의 기반인 실증주의적 메타이론이 글로벌 지식장에서 당연히 준수해야할 공인구라고 지적하고, 그 공인구를 사용해서 이론화를 해야 서구의 인정을 받고 한국 학계의 서구 종속성을 극복한다고 주장한다. 그러나, 이러한 이론의 이해는 구성적 이론 혹은 이론의 구성적 측면을 간과하는 단선적인, 그리고 제한적인 이론의 이해이다. 여기서 공인구는 정당한/정당하지 않은 지식을 구분하는 게이트키핑을 하면서 학계에서 인식론적 폭력을 행사한다. 이는 채용, 승진, 평가 등의 학자들의 일상에도 영향을 미친다. 더욱이, 국제정치학계의 경험을 유추해 볼 때 주류학계의 지배적인 인식론을 쓰지 않아도 글로벌 지식장의 변형과 발전은 가능하다. 또한, 『글로벌』의 서구 인정을 통한 서구종속성 극복이라는 방식의 근저에는 주변인의 식민주의가 배태되어 있다. 이론화가 정치적 행위임을, 학문으로서 사회과학이 현실정치에 종종 연루됨을 고려할 때, 이론가의 연구태도는 연구내용만큼 중요하다.

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to critically examine the ways in which Korean social science engages with the hegemonic Western social science in the global academia. Toward this end, methodologically this paper looks at a recently published, polemic monograph by a Korean sociologist, Global Intellectual Field and Symbolic Power: Critical Reflection on Korean Social Sciences (2015). According to this monograph, positivist meta-theory as a self-evident basis of social science should be adopted in social science theorization. Therefore, based on the positivist meta-theory, Korean social scientists produce their own explanatory theories which can be accepted in the global intellectual field dominated by mainstream Western scholars. When made-in-Korea or made-by-Korean theories receive a favorable recognition from the West, Western-dependency in Korean social science scholarship can finally be overcome, the monograph argues. However, this line of meta-theoretical argument for explanatory social science theory is monolithic, as it ignores different understandings of meta-theory and constitutive social science theory. Plus, the monograph’s argument of positivist meta-theory as only valid plays a gate-keeping role in deciding legitimate/proper or illegitimate/improper knowledge in the intellectual field. This is an epistemological violence which affects scholars research activities and even daily lives. Considering the scholarly trajectory of international relations studies, it is possible to change and develop the global intellectual field by using post-positivist meta-theoretical underpinnings for social science theorization. The monograph’s suggestion of overcoming Western-dependency via the West’s favorable recognition is embedded in colonial thinking. Since theorization is a political act and social science development has been complicit in real politics, theorist’s research attitude matters as much as his/her research content in theorization.
