대학, 번역, 책임: 칸트와 데리다의 『학부들의 논쟁』

국문 초록

이 글은 제도와 번역에 관한 자크 데리다의 사유를 바탕으로 대학의 지속 가능성을 번역의 문제로 이해하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본문에서는 임마누엘 칸트가 말년에 발표한 대학론『학부들의 논쟁』을 데리다가 어떻게 해체와 번역 가능성의 관점에서 비판적으로 검토하는지 살펴본다. 칸트의 대학론은 통치 및 실용성과 연관된 법학부, 의학부, 신학부가 속한 상위 학부, 그리고 이성에 입각한 비판과 발언의 자유를 보장받는 철학부가 속한 하위 학부 사이의 대립으로 요약된다. 데리다에 따르면, 이성과 자율성을 근간으로 삼는 칸트의 대학론은 그것을 지탱하는 각종 이항대립의 내적 모순과 시대 변화에 따른 적용 불가능성으로 말미암아 오늘날의 맥락으로 온전히 번역하는 데 여러 난점이 따른다. 그러나 데리다는 대학의 번역 불가능성에서 오히려 제도 일반의 특성을 이끌어내고, 불가능성이란 무엇보다 책임과 결부된 문제임을 강조한다. 이상의 논의를 통해 결론에서는 데리다가 칸트에게서 발견했던 대학 제도의 결점과 불완전성 등의 번역 불가능성이 오히려 긴급히 번역과 새로운 제도의 발명을 촉구하는 동력이자 명령일 수 있음을, 나아가 대학의 ‘사후의 삶’은 그러한 ‘불가능한 것에 대한 경험’과 책임 속에서만 지속될 수 있음을 밝히고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study attempts to understand a sustainability of the university through thoughts of Jacques Derrida on institution and translation. For this, we examine how Derrida approaches Immanuel Kant’s The Conflict of the Faculties critically from the viewpoint of deconstruction and untranslatability. Kant’s discourse on the university is summarized as a opposition between the higher faculty to which the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Theology belongs, and the lower faculty of philosophy, which is guaranteed freedom of speech and criticism based on reason. According to Derrida, however, Kant’s thoughts of the university, founded on reason and autonomy, has its own set of difficulties in translating into the context of today because of its inner contradictions of many dichotomies and changes in the times. But Derrida derives the characteristics of institution in general from the untranslatability of the university, and emphasizes that the impossibility is, above all, a matter of responsibility. In conclusion, this study tries to demonstrate that the untranslatability of Kant’s discourse on the university could rather be the driving force and the imperative to call for translations and new institutions, and that an ‘afterlife’ of the university can only be sustained within such ‘an experience of the impossible.’
