임진왜란 극복과 온양방씨의 역할에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

이 글은 1592년 임진왜란으로 조선이 패망의 위기를 당했을 때 우국충정으로 구국에 앞장섰던 온양방씨 인물들의 역할과 기여를 고찰한 논문이다. 낙안군수 방덕룡과 군관부장 방응원은 삼도수군통제사 이순신과 함께 노량해전에서 전사했던 조선수군의 영웅이다. 보성군수를 지낸 장인 방진은 청년 이순신을 무인의 길로 인도하고 무예를 지도함으로써 구국의 영웅이 되었으니 곧 구국의 원훈이었다. 총명했던 아내 방씨부인은 영민한 지혜와 올곧은 부덕으로 충무공 이순신을 내조했던 정경부인이었다. 이와 같이 왜적을 물리치고 임진왜란을 극복하는데 직간접적으로 기여한 많은 온양방씨들의 역할이 있었다. 1592년 4월 13일 일본군이 부산 절영도 앞바다에 쳐들어왔다. 임진년에 왜적들이 전란을 일으켰으니 임진왜란이다. 일본의 조선 침략은 명나라를 정복하기 위해 조선을 교두보로 삼겠다는 도요토미 히데요시의 허황된 야욕에서 비롯됐다. 따라서 임진왜란은 조ㆍ일ㆍ명 3국이 함께 싸웠던 동북아시아 국제전쟁이었다. 하지만 이 전쟁은 모두가 패자일 뿐 승자는 없었다. 그렇다면 과연 임진왜란에서 승자는 없었는가, 오직 한 사람 충무공 이순신이 있었다. 조선수군의 상하조직을 일사불란하게 통솔했던 통제사 이순신의 지휘능력이 있었고, 일본과 명나라 장수들에게 해전마다 보여줬던 통제사 이순신의 전술능력이 있었다. 조선수군에게 연전연패 당했던 일본군의 전승의지는 철저히 붕괴되고 말았으니 풍전등화 같았던 조선의 운명은 기사회생할 수 있었다. 누가 뭐라 해도 임진왜란의 유일한 승자는 구국의 영웅 충무공 이순신이다. 조ㆍ일ㆍ명 국제전쟁 당사자였던 한국, 일본, 중국, 3국의 역사가 공히 충무공 이순신을 승리의 영웅으로 기록하고 있는 사실이 곧 그 증명이다. 그렇다면 과연 영웅은 혼자 이루어지는 것인가, 거기엔 잘 알려진 조력자들도 있었고 조명 받지 못한 협력자들도 있었다. 예컨대 도와주고 믿었던 대신들이 있었고 신뢰하고 따랐던 부하들이 있었고 의지하고 기댔던 백성들이 있었다. 무엇보다 피를 나눈 덕수이씨 친족들과 피를 합친 온양방씨 처족들이 있었다. 이들의 희생과 충정을 간과할 수 없는 이유는 조건 없이 주는 희생과 아낌없이 주는 사랑은 오직 가족일 때 더욱 강력하게 발휘되기 때문이다. 이순신의 처가 온양방씨 구국공신들의 우국충정이야말로 임진왜란 극복에 중요한 역할과 기여라고 할 수 있는 이유이다. 그동안 상대적으로 부각되지 않은 온양방씨 인물 중 낙안군수 방덕룡과 그의 증조부 방륜 조부 방호의, 이순신의 장인이었던 보성군수 방진과 그의 외동딸로 충무공의 아내였던 정경부인 온양방씨, 이순신의 군관부장이었던 방응원과 휘하부장이었던 목포만호 방수경, 옥포만호 방승경 등을 고찰하게 되는 이유이다.

영문 초록

This writing is a paper which considered the role and contribution of the figures from the Bangs of Onyang who took the lead in national salvation with their patriotism when the Joseon Dynasty was faced with the crisis of a fall due to Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, Nagan governor Bang, Deok-ryong, and Gungwanbujang Bang, Eung-won were the heroes of the naval forces of the Joseon Dynasty who were killed in action at the naval battle at Noryang, together with the commander of Navy Headquarters of Three Provinces, Yi, Sun-sin. Bang, jin(Yi,Sun-shin’s father-in-law)worked as Boseong governor became a hero of national salvation by leading a young man named Yi, Sun-sin to the career of a military officer and directing Yi, Sun-sin’s martial arts, so Bang, Jin was the very man of highest merit in saving the country. The intelligent wife of Yi, Sun-sin, Ma’am Bang was Jeonggyeongbuin(a title of nobility) who assisted Yi, Sun-sin with her bright wisdom and honest womanly virtues. Like this, there existed the role of many Bangs of Onyang who contributed to the defeat of Japanese invaders, and conquest of Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 directly and indirectly. On April 13, 1592, the Japanese troops attacked the coastal water of Jeolyeong-do Island. In the year of Imjin(Dragon), the Japanese invaders started war, so it is called Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Japan’s invasion of the Joseon Dynasty was derived from Toyotomi Hideyosi’s absurd ambition of using Joseon as a bridgehead in a bid to conquer the Ming Dynasty. Accordingly, the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 is an international war in Northeast Asia, in which Joseon, Japan and Ming engaged in warfare. However, there were only the losers with no winner in this war. If so, isn’t there truly a winner in Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592? No! There was only one person-Chungmugong Yi, Sun-sin. There existed the command ability of the controlling commander, Yi, Sun-sin of the naval forces of Joseon, who controlled the up-and-down organization of the naval forces of Joseon consistently, and the tactical ability of the controlling commander Yi, Sun-sin, which was shown to the commanders of Japan and Ming state in every naval battle. The volition for complete victory of the Japanese troops, which got successive defeats by Josen naval forces, was thoroughly collapsed; consequently, Joseon’s fate, which was hanging by a thread, was able to restore from death. No matter who may say, the only winner of Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 is the hero of national salvation, Chungmugong Yi, Sun-sin. The fact that the history of the parties involved in the international war between Joseon, Japan and Ming state commonly records Chungmugong Yi,Sun-shin as a hero of victory is the very evidence. If so, is a hero truly self-achieved? There were the well-known assistants, and also cooperators who didn’t get the limelight. For example, there were high-ranking officials who helped and trusted Yi, Sun-sin, and subordinates who trusted and followed Yi, Sun-sin as well as the people who relied on Yi, Sun-sin. Among others, there were the relatives of Yis of Deoksu who shared blood with Yi, Sun-sin, and wife’s relatives of the Bangs of Onyang who tied blood with Yi, Sun-sin. The reason for not overlooking their sacrifices and sincere loyalty is that the sacrifice given unconditionally, and love given unsparingly can be displayed more powerfully when the givers are only the family members. That’s why the very patriotism displayed by the meritorious retainers of Yi, Sun-sin’s wife’s relatives from the Bangs of Onyong for saving the country can be said to be a vital role in, and contribution to the conquest of Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Also, that’s why this paper consider Nagan governor Bang, Deok-ryong, his great-grandfather Bang, Ryun, his grandfather Bang, Ho-ui, Boseong governor Bang, Jin who was Yi, Sun-sin’s father-in-law, and his only daughter and
