병법의 관점에서 본 부산포 해전

국문 초록

이 글은 부산포해전을 병법의 관점에서 조망하기 위한 것이다. 부산포해전은 다음과 같이 그 의의를 정리해 볼 수 있다.첫째, 부산포해전은 임진년 해전뿐만 아니라 임진왜란, 정유재란의 전 해전을 통틀어 이순신이 조선 수군만 가지고 치른 해전 가운데 가장 큰 규모의 해전이고, 가장 장거리의 출동이었으며, 가장 커다란 전과를 올린 해전이다. 조선 함대 180여 척과 일본 함대 470여 척 도합 650여 척이 참여하였으니 최대 규모의 해전이다. 또한 여수부터 부산까지 총 220여 ㎞에 달하는 최장거리의 출동이었다. 나아가 100여 척을 격파하였으니 임진년 해전 가운데 전과가 가장 컸던 해전이다. 둘째, 부산포해전은 일본군의 퇴로를 차단, 공략하고 일본군의 총사령부인 부산포를 직접 공격하여 위협함으로써 일본의 조선 침략 전략을 전면 수정하게 한 해전이다. 일본군은 부산포를 공격당하게 되자 퇴로에 대한 안전 확보와 부산포 방어를 위해 군사력을 재배치하지 않으면 안 되었다. 셋째, 부산포해전은 평양과 함경도까지 진출한 일본 지상군 부대들이 남해연안으로 철수하는데 결정적 영향을 끼친 해전이다. 남쪽 해상에서는 조선 수군이 자신들의 퇴로 및 침략 본거지인 부산포를 위협하고 북쪽에서는 4만 3천여 명의 명나라 원군(援軍)이 파병되어 평양성을 내주었으니 그야말로 일본군은 진퇴양난의 형국이 되었다. 그들에게 남은 방법은 남해 연안으로 철수하는 것 밖에 없었다. 넷째, 도요토미 히데요시가 직접 바다를 건너와 전쟁을 지휘할 기회를 차단함으로써 일본군의 전쟁 지도력을 약화시킨 해전이다. 임진왜란 발발 직후 도요토미 히데요시는 직접 바다를 건너 조선으로 와서 전쟁을 지휘할 예정이었으나 결국 좌절되었다. 조선 수군의 부산포 공격으로 말미암아 해로(海路) 뿐만이 아니라 침략 본거지인 부산포조차도 안전을 보장할 수 없었기 때문이었다.

영문 초록

This article highlights naval battle of Busanpo from the perspective of the art of war. The significance of this naval battle can be understood as follow. First of all. from wars that led by admiral Yi Sun Sin with only Chosun’s Naval forces. Naval battle of Busanpo was the greatest in scale among wars that occurred not just in Imjin year. but also among naval battles such as Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 (Imjin-waeran) and 1597 (Jungyu-waeran). This war also achieved the greatest result and had the longest mobilization of troops. The fact that this naval battle included total of 650 battle ships including 180 Chosun and 470 Japanese battle ships proves that it was the greatest naval battle during its period. Moreover. it had the longest mobilization of troops from Yeosu to Busan that travelled approximately 220km. Furthermore. the military achievement resulted due to naval battle of Busanpo was greatest among wars in Imjin year as over 100 Japanese ships were destroyed. Second. Naval battle of Busanpo was a naval war that resulted in a total adjustment of Japan’s Chosun invasion plan by targeting and eliminating Japanese troop’s retreat routes as well as threatening BusanPo through direct attack. where the general headquarter of Japanese military forces were located. Once BusanPo was attacked. Japanese troops had no other options available but to reallocate its military forces as they had to protect BusanPo and secure the safety of their retreat routes. Thirdly. this naval war played a decisive role over Japanese ground forces’s retreat to Southern sea coast. which had marched up to PyeongYang and HamgyongDo. From the South sea. Chosun’s Naval forces were threatening the retreat routes and BusanPo. their invasion stronghold. and from the North. they had to surrender PyongYang Castle as 43.000 of Ming dynasty’s reinforcements were dispatched. Under this situation. the only viable option for Japanese troops were to retreat back to Southern sea coast. Lastly. Naval battle of Busanpo eliminated the opportunity for Toyotomi Hideyoshi to personally cross the sea and lead the war himself. as a consequence. the war leadership of Japanese military forces was weakened. Straight after the outbreak of Japanese invasion of Korea in 1952(Imjin-waeran). Toyotomi Hideyoshi was planning to arrive to Chosun and lead the Japanese troops. yet he failed. Due to Chosun’s Naval forces attack on BusanPo. not only the safety of the seaway. but also the safety of their invasion stronghold. Busanpo. were not insured.
