국문 초록

1597년 4월 1일 이순신은 한양 의금부 감옥에서 석방될 때 참담하였다. 조선군사령관 권율 대장 밑에서 군사업무를 수행하라는 명령을 받았다. 이순신은 구례군청을 지나 순천시로 향하였다. 당시 조선군 도원수 권율이 순천부에 있었기 때문이다. 이순신은 권율을 만나 군무를 수행하기 위하여 남쪽으로 길을 떠났다. 이순신이 수원을 거쳐 남하하는 길에 비보를 접했다. 고령의 모친이 사망하였다. 그는 좌절과 비통함에 휩싸였다. 백의종군의 처지라 오래 머물 수 없어 상중임에도 서둘러 길을 떠났다. 공주를 거처 여산에 도착하였다. 1597년 4월 22일 전라북도 ‘삼례’를 출발 하여 ‘전주’, ‘임실’, ‘남원’, ‘운봉’, ‘남원’을 지나 왔다. 이어서 전라남도 구례, 순천에 이르렀다. 조선군 도원수 권율 진이 있는 순천에 도착하니 1597년 4월 27일이었다. 이순신은 27일간의 고단한 행군으로 몸과 마음이 지쳤다. 이순신은 순천에서 처음으로 도원수 권율이 보낸 군관과 교신하였다. 이순신은 순천에서 18일간 머물렀다. 이 기간 동안 이순신은 고위 대감과 정사준 군인 간부를 만나 정보를 수집하였다. 또 한산도 진중에서 온 장수들이 모친상을 당한 이순신을 찾아와 조의를 표하고 수군의 상황도 보고하였다. 이순신은 순천시에서 수집한 정보를 이용하여 새로운 전략을 구상하였다. 위기 속에서도 결코 포기하지 않았다. 이순신은 준비하는 자세를 견지하였다. 우리들에게 “준비된 자만이 승리할 수 있다.”는 교훈을 주었다. 이순신은 5월 14일 구례로 이동하여 손인필 군관을 만났다. 그리고 조정에서 파견한 체찰사 이원익 대감을 만나기 위해 이동하였다. 구례군청 ‘명협정’에서 이원익 대감을 만나게 되었다. 이순신은 밤을 새우면서 이원익 대감과 전략을 모색하였다. 구례군 수령 이원춘과 구례군 백성들은 이순신을 환영하였다. 비록 죄인의 몸이지만 구례 백성들의 친절한 모습은 그에게 재기의 신념을 주었다. 이는 어려운 현실을 극복할 수 있는 힘이 되었다. 이순신은 구례에서 14일 정도를 지냈다. 이 기간 동안 재침략할 일본을 맞아 어떻게 승전할 것인가를 생각하였다. 구례군 행군길은 이순신의 호국 정신과 열정이 담겨져 있다. 나라와 백성을 사랑하는 이순신 정신이 곳곳에 서려 있다. 이순신이 행군한 길에는 그의 꿈과 열정이 녹아 있다. 여기서 긍정적 사고를 배울 수 있다. 이순신이 행군한 백의종군로는 역사적으로 큰 의미가 있다. 그러기에 이를 관광자원으로 활용하였다. 이 길은 자연 그대로 강변을 이용하여 만들었다. 길가에 심어진 나무들로 인해 4계절의 변화를 볼 수 있다. ‘자전거도로’와 ‘걷는 길’이 잘 조성되어 있다. 총 119.1km의 ‘남도 이순신길 백의종군로’를 개설하였다. 1구간부터 7구간으로 만들었다. 그리고 이 길을 찾는 관광객을 위해 편의시설을 만들었다. 쉼터공원, 벤치, 탐방가이드북, 안내지도, 안내판을 제작하였다. 그 결과 학생, 해군사관학교, 공무원 교육장으로 활용하게 되었다. 이 길은 지역 역사발굴의 의미가 있으며 각 지역 관광활성화에 기여하기 위한 것이다. 또 지역민의 정체성을 높여주는 길이다.

영문 초록
