국문 초록

과학 교육에서 관찰은 기초 탐구 기능의 하나로 모든 과학적 탐구 활동의 출발점이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 학생들의 관찰 행동을 관찰하여 관찰에 대한 학습자 특성을 분류하고, 초등학생이 이해하는 관찰의 의미를 분석함으로써 보다 성공적인 과 학적 관찰 활동 지도를 위한 시사점을 얻는데 목적이 있다. 연구자는 초등학교 6학년 한 학급, 29명을 대상으로 과학시간의 관찰 중심 탐구 활동 차시에 대한 1년간의 참여관찰을 통해 관찰에 대한 학습자 특성을 지식형, 성실형, 모험형의 세 가지로 분 류하였다. 학생들은 학습자 특성 유형에 따라 공통된 관찰 행동 특징을 나타내었다. 각 학습자 유형별 대표 연구 대상자를 선정하여 심층 관찰과 설문 및 면담을 실시한 결과 학생들은 학습자 특성 유형에 따라 관찰에 대해 서로 다른 이해 양상을 보였으며, 저마다의 이해 양상에 따라 서로 다른 목적으로 관찰 활동을 수행하였다. 따라 서 보다 성공적인 관찰 활동 수행을 위해서 교사는 학생들의 관찰 행동에 관심을 갖고 학생들이 ‘왜 관찰을 하고 있는지’를 면밀히 관찰하여 지도할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

In science education, the observation - one of the basic inquiry skills - is the starting point of all scientific inquiry activities. The purpose of this study is to categorize the characteristics of learners in scientific observation situations and to analyze the students perceiving meanings of observation. Implications for teachers teaching methods to guide their students observation successfully could be suggested with the findings of the study. In this study the characteristics of learners in scientific observation situations were classified as intellectual learners, diligent learners and adventurous learners by observing twenty-nine 6th graders science lessons with their observation activies in elementary school for one year. There was a certain and unique feature in observation behavior of each type of learners. As a result of analyzing three students (selected as representatives of each type the characteristics of learners in scientific observation situations) data collected by An in-depth observation and an interview, there were differences in students perceiving meanings of observation depending on their types. And they observes in pursuit of different purposes by their type. Thus, for a more successful observation activities, teachers should be interested in students observation behavior and find the answer for why they observe? first before their instruction and assessment.
