본 논문은 메리 울스턴크래프트의 󰡔머라이어󰡕를 푸코가 언급한 근대적 광기의 계보학의 시각에서 읽는 것을 목표로 한다. 울스턴크래프트는 머라이어가 정신병원에 감금 되고 탈출하는 이야기를 통해, 18세기 말에 탄생한 근대적 정신병원과 정신의학이 어떻게 여성과 여성의 광기를 감금하고 처벌했는지, 또한 어떻게 그것들에 저항했는지 실감나게 보여준다. 미치지 않았음에도 불구하고 정신병원에 감금되어, 머라이어는 모든 것을 보고, 모든 것을 안다고 가정되는 정신의학적 시선의 관찰 대상이 된다. 또한 다른 수용자, 즉 “광기의 거울”을 통해, 자기 자신의 잠재적인 광기를 감시하고 관찰 해야하는 정신의학적 시선의 주체가 될 것을 강요받기도 한다. 하지만 그녀는 자신이 미치지 않았다는 것을 입증함으로써, 자신을 광인으로 간주하는 정신의학적 시선의 허구성을 폭로한다. 또한 머라이어는 정신병원에 감금되어 거의 미칠 지경에 이르지 만, 정신의학 담론이 강요하는 “진실-말하기”를 거부하고, 그것에 저항하는 자신만의 대항-서사를 통해, 정신병원 감시원 제마이머를 설득하기에 이르며, 그녀와 이루는 우정의 공동체를 통해 정신병원과 정신병원 내부로부터의 전복 가능성을 제시한다.

영문 초록

In The Wrongs of Woman, or Maria, Mary Wollstonecraft tells the story of a woman who is imprisoned in a private madhouse even though she is not insane. In this fictional narrative, Wollstonecraft produces a counter-narrative of women’s madness, an alternative history of how women were imprisoned in the madhouse, of how psychiatric discourse normalized them, and of how they resisted the apparatuses of the madhouse and psychiatry at the end of the eighteenth century. In the madhouse, Maria becomes an object of supposedly all-seeing psychiatric gaze and a subject who examines her own madness. However, she reveals the fictionality of such supposedly all-seeing gaze which sees her madness, by proving that she is not mad. And at the same time she becomes both an object and subject of the psychiatric discourse. While answering psychiatric questioning, “Are you mad? If not, prove.” she confesses whether she is mad or not. But, paradoxically enough, her confessions come to convince Jemima, an asylum-keeper, that she is not mad. As such, her counter-narrative reveals fictionality and incompleteness of psychiatric discourse itself. Even at the very moment of forgetting and silence, nonetheless, Wollstonecraft’s fictional narrative Maria, as genealogy and counter-memory, presents how women’s dangerous potential always speaks and shows itself problematizing the master narrative of the progressive emergence of reason and truth.
