Can a leader be both pragmatic and ideological?

국문 초록

본 연구는 조선왕조실록 세종편에 입각하여, Mumford (2006)와 그의 동료들의 선행연구에 서 다루지 않은, 실용적 리더십과 이념적 리더십의 상호작용 가능성을 질적 연구를 통해서 검증하는 것을 목적으로 이뤄졌다. 이를 위해서 20명의 리더십전문가로 이뤄진 패널을 통하여 세조실록의 내용을 다 읽고 리더십관련 사례들을 추출하도록 하였으며, 그 결과 95 사례들이 도출되어 이 들을 중심으로 각 사례가 실용적 리더십, 이념적 리더십, 또는 둘 다 중 어떤 내용을 담고 있는지를 적시하도록 하여 분석하였다. 분석결과를 보면, 세종대왕이 백성들의 욕구를 충족시키는 행위를 담고 있는 리더십사례들에 있어서는 조선의 유교적 이념(Konfucian ideology)과 그의 실용적 리더십이 상호작용을 하는 것으로 밝혀졌으나, 국가적 필요(national needs)를 다루는 사례들에 있어서는 실용적 리더십이 독자적으로 영향을 미쳤다. 이론적 함의에 있어서 본 연구의 결과는 특정 리더를 카리스마적, 이념적, 또는 실용적이라고 규정하는 것은 지나친 단순화의 우를 범할 수 있다는 사실을 경고한다. 과다한 단순화는 특히 리더가 이념을 실현하는 이슈들에 있어 부각될 수 있다. 본 연구의 한계와 향후의 연구방향에 대해서 논의하였다.

영문 초록

Based on the King Sejong’s Sillok or Veritable Records of Joseon Dynasty, the present study qualitatively examined a possible interaction between pragmatic and ideological leadership, which Mumford (2006) and his colleagues have ignored. Twenty panels of leadership experts identified 95 cases of King Sejong’s leadership out of the Sillok of King Sejong, and analyzed if each case were related to pragmatic, ideological leadership or both. As a result, it was confirmed that in cases relating to the King’s efforts to satisfy people’s wants Konfucian ideology interacted with pragmatic endeavors, while in cases of the King’s dealing with national needs pragmatic leadership prevailed. The results of the present study warn that it could be oversimplification to define a particular leader as charismatic, ideological, or pragmatic. Oversimplification is particularly plausible when we define a leader confronting issues or cases through which his or her ideological values are being implemented. Limitations of the study were discussed alongside future research directions in relevant areas.
