국문 초록

본 논문은 신약 위경인『바울과 세네카의 편지』의 목적을 재고하며, 그 일차적인 목적이 기독교 변증적 목적이 있음을 논증한 글이다. 전통적으로 학자들은『바울과 세네카의 편지』는 내용이 없으며 무의미한 위경 문서로 취급했다. 그러나 이는 진위성(역사적 바울과 세네카의 교류)의 문제에 있어서 그러한 것이지, 이 문서 자체가 갖는 역사적 가치를 평가했던 것은 아니다. 이제 분명히 위경 문헌으로 밝혀진 여러 문헌들의 역사적 가치에 대한 평가가 긍정적으로 진행되면서 해당 문헌들의 의미를 새롭게 규정하는 시도들이 진행되고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문은 학자들이 제시하는『바울과 세네카의 편지』의 출현 시기와 더불어 본 편지들의 내용에 근거하여 본 편지 모음집이 기독교 핍박(대 박해)이 심하던 주후 4세기 초, 로마 당국으로부터 호의를 얻고 기독교를 변증하기 위해 스토아주의의 대표인 세네카와 기독교의 대표 사도 바울의 가상적 교류를 설정하여 작성된 편지임을 제안한다.

영문 초록

In rethinking the aim(s) of the Correspondences of Paul and Seneca, I suggest its primary purpose to be apologetic. Most scholars have treated this letter collection to be without-content and useless forgery. In fact, such evaluation was often based on the issue of its authenticity(were Paul and Seneca really contacted in the first century C.E.?), not on its historical value and meaning(s). However, in recent years apocryphal and pseudepigraphal writings have been re-evaluated in terms of it historical value and meaning(s). Agreeing that all writings have their own value and meaning(s) in their times, I insist in the basis of the internal evidence(i.e. analysis on letters) that this letter writer composed it in the times of “Great Persecution” or a little bit later(ca. 300 C.E.) in order to get a favor from Roman authorities and defend the Christianity through creating a fictitious relationship between Seneca a great teacher of Stoicism and Paul a great apostle of Christianity.
