미국도서관협회의 ‘금서주간(Banned Books Week)’ PR활동 연구 : ‘도전받은 책(Challenged Books)’을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 미국도서관협회가 1982년 이래 실시해 오고 있는 ‘금서 주간’ 활동의 핵심인 ‘도전받은 책’의 특성을 파악하고, 이와 관련한 미국도서관협회의 PR활동을 살펴보았다. 분석결과, 2001년부터 2016 년까지 16년 동안 전체 6,666권의 도서가 도전받은 것으로 확인되었다.이 가운데 매해 가장 빈번하게 도전받은 책 상위 10권의 목록을 대상으로그 현황을 파악한 결과, 중복된 책을 제외한 총 80권의 책이 16년 동안 가장 많은 도전을 받은 것으로 나타났다. 도전받은 책들의 71.3%는 아동용 혹은 10대 청소년 대상 도서였으며, 전체 502건의 이유를 근거로 도전받은 것으로 파악되었다. 도전받은 이유로는 해당 도서가 ‘연령집단에 부적절’하다는 이유가 가장 많았고, 이어 ‘성적묘사가 지나침’, ‘종교적 관점을 반영함’, ‘반사회적 내용을 다룸’ 등의 순으로 높게 집계되었다. 미국도서관협회는 지적자유의 확대와 실현을 위해 도전받은 책 관련 문제를 공개적으로 논의하고 토론할 수 있도록 다양한 공중을 대상으로 PR활동을 수행하고 있으며, 지역사회가 이에 협조할 수 있도록 독려하고 있었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the current status and characteristics of the Challenged Books which is the core activity of the Banned Books Week that has been conducted by the American Library Association since 1982 and also to examine how they deal with this issue. Above all, 6,666 books had been challenged for 16 years from 2001 to 2016. Analyzing 10 of the most frequently challenged books of each year, 80 books were included in the top 10 of the most challenged books as excluding duplicate ones. 71.3% of books out of all were for children and teenagers. Also, the challenged books were suggested based on 502 reasons. Among them, the most important reason for books have been banned is not suitable for the age group, followed by the reasons of excessive description, religious viewpoint, and antisocial contents. The American Library Association collects information on challenging books from different groups of public and institutions. Also, they carry out various activities to resolve this through open discussion and encourage the community to cooperate.
