영문 초록

Yi Ha-eungHeungseon Daewongun, l820-l898, the father of King Gojong, was a powerful regent in the late Joseon dynasty and a devoted Buddhist patron who actively commissioned many Buddhist paintings. Twelve of such works are known to survive today and most of them were produced during the regent s most powerful years, commissioned to wish for the peaceful afterlife of his parents in the Buddhist land of bliss, the safety and prosperity of the royal family, the wealth of his family and relatives during their lifetime, and their blissful afterlife. Features and characteristics of each of the paintings commissioned by Heungseon Daewongun can be identified through analysis of the purpose of the enshrining building, the size and stylistic features of the painting, and the participating donors. Yi Ha-eung also established two guardian temples, Bodeoksa Temple in Yesan and Unsuam Hermitage in Anseong, and dedicated the series of paintings upon construction of the temples. Sometimes he commissioned a painting coupled with his wife, Lady Min, along with his children, or in a group with other ordinary donors, who were additionally joined by court ladies and even powerful families at the time. The Buddhist paintings commissioned by the Heungseon Daewongun display great artistry as they were produced by some of the leading painters of the time, and are important sources to understand features and aspects of Buddhist paintings commissioned by the royal family near the end of the Joseon dynasty.
