호적의 연구방법론 성립 과정, 응용 및그 영향에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

중국 근현대사를 이해하는 여러 가지 연구 경향에서 우리가 주목해야 할것은 최근 과거와의 단절이라는 시각 에서 벗어나 어떻게 중국 전통과 서구 사상이 접목되었는지에 대해 본격적인 연구들이 많아지고 있다는 사실이다. 본고에서 논의하려고 하는 호적과 관련한 연구에서도 이미 상당수 기존 연 구들이 호적과 중국 전통 학술 사상과는 어떠한 관련이 있는지 상당히 심도 있는 연구를 진행하였다. 그러나 호적의 연구방법론 형성 과정에서 실험주 의는 어떠한 역할을 하였는지 또 어떻게 호적 자신의 연구에 적용 되었는지에 대해서는 논의가 부족한 것이 사실 이다. 중국 학술사, 문학사, 사상사 등각 영역에서 현대의 시작이라고 볼 수있는 호적의 영향력은 의심할 여지가 없다. 때문에 본 논문에서는 호적 연구방 법론과 그 영향에 대한 이해를 통해 그의 연구방법론의 형성과정과 이론적 토대를 바탕으로 어떻게 그의 연구방 법론이 실제로 자신의 연구에 사용되 었는지, 또 호적의 연구방법론이 어떻게 당시 사회에 영향력을 발휘할 수 있었는지를 미시적 분석을 통해 알아보 려고 한다. 이러한 분석 작업을 통해 우리는 호적의 연구방법론이 결국 중국 고전이 가지고 있는 권위에 대한 도전이었으며 중국 현대 학술계 태동을 가져 온 결정적인 원인을 제공하였음을 알 수있다. 또한 민국 초기 새로운 현대적인 서구식 학술 규범을 만들어 가던 중국 학술계에 전통과 구미 방법론의 통섭의 가장 중요한 업적이 바로 호적을 통해 이루어지고 있음을 발견하게 된다. 호적의 연구방법론은 그 자신뿐만 아니라 顧頡剛, 王重民, 羅爾鋼 등의 연구에도 중요한 역할을 하게 되며 결국 호적 자신이 진행한 중국과 구미 연구방법론의 비교와 검토를 통해 향후 중국 학술계가 어떠한 길을 걸어야 하는지 현대적 표준을 보여 주는 역할을 하게 된다.

영문 초록

A prevalent perspective regarding “traditional Chinese and Western modernity” as a past and present, or in other words a divided historic fault line, is gradually declining. Now, academia is paying more attention to the integration process of traditional Chinese and modern Western thoughts. Through the theme of this paper, Hu Shih (胡適, 1891-1962) and research related to his research method, we also see the same trend. With regard to Hu Shih’s research method, most studies have attempted to discern how Dewey s pragmatism and traditional Chinese academic thought impacted him; less attention has been paid to show how Hu Shih initiatively chose these methodologies to develop his own research method. Furthermore, how Hu Shih used his research method in his own research works and how this may impact other major scholars are topics that still need microscopic analysis. We can see in the histories of Chinese philosophy and Chinese literature that Hu Shih’s works undoubtedly were the starting point of modern scholarship in China. However, because Hu Shih introduced the methodology of Dewey’s pragmatism (instrumentalism) into China, a lot of criticism focused on Hu Shih and his misunderstanding of the methodology of pragmatism. But, the actual content of Hu Shih’s research method and the positive social impact of related issues still require in-depth microscopic discussion and analysis. This paper will discuss the process through which Hu Shih established his research methods. For this reason, we first try to understand the functional relation between Hu Shih’s research method and Dewey’s pragmatism. We also try to understand how to apply Hu Shih’s research method to his own research works, and learn more about how his research method has impacted other famous scholars. We also have to recognize that Hu Shih s research method and the process through which it was established was not only was an integration process between Chinese and western academic tradition but also a reconstruction proposal and standard for modern Chinese academia.
