조선후기 天文學兼敎授의 활동과 그 의미

국문 초록

천문학겸교수는 조선왕조의 관상감 운영체계가 경국대전 단계에서 서운관지 단계까지 계기적으로 발전해 가는 과정에서 출현하였다. 이들은 문과에는 합격하지 못했지만 문신에 버금가는 家格과 학문적 소양을 갖춘 자로서, 특히 천문학에 조예가 깊어 특채 형식으로 뽑힌 사대부 출신의 천문학 전문가였다. 공식적인 절차 없이 추천으로 선발되었고, 또 정해진 근무일수를 채우면 동반의 참상직으로 승진할 수 있는 특혜도 있었다. 천문학겸교수는 비교적 늦은 나이에 출사하여 군직을 받고 천문학겸교수로 활동하다 가 동반 정직으로 승육해 나가는 거의 패턴화 된관직활동을 하였다. 그러면서도 천문학 분야에서 전문성을 발휘하며 성과를 냈다. 혼천시계를 제작한 송이영과 천동상위고를 집필한 최천벽이 조선후기의 대표적인 천문학겸교수였다고 할수 있다. 17세기 중반 이후 가격과 실력이 낮은 천문학겸교수가 늘어난다는 지적으로 천문학겸 교수의 직제는 정비되었다. 실력이 우수한 천문 학겸교수의 지속적인 확보를 위해 정원을 1원에서 3원으로 늘리되, 증설한 2명은 임명절차를 보다 강화하는 방향으로 정비되었다.

영문 초록

The post of astronomy adjunct professor emerged during the establishment of the Bureau of Astronomy(Gwansanggam)’s operating system, which developed from Gyeonggukdaejeon into Seowoongwanji. Astronomy adjunct professors were scholars from good families who demonstrated academic accomplishments, although they did not have to pass the civil service examination. They entered the government’s service through a special employment program following recommendation from a high office for their expertise in astronomy. After a period of time, they were given preferential treatment for promotion as a Chamsangjik of Civil Officials(Dongban). At a relatively late age, they entered the government’s service for the first time as astronomy adjunct professors, and patterned civil service activities. They demonstrated their abilities as great astronomers, and achieved good results. Song Lee-yong, who produced the armillary clock, and Choi Cheon-byeok, who wrote a Cheondonggangwigo, are two representative astronomy adjunct professors of the late Joseon. From the mid-seventeenth century, the abilities of astronomy adjunct professors declined, causing a modification of the astronomy adjunct professor system. The procedures for the appointment of astronomy adjunct professors were strengthened, and the number of appointees was increased from one to three in order to be sure to have a capable astronomy adjunct professor.
