국문 초록

김태준의 <조선소설사>는 세 개의 버전이 있다. 1. 동아일보 연재 ‘조선소설사’(1930 년 10월 31일∼1931년 2월 14일) 2. 청진서관 발행 ≷조선소설사≸(1933년) 3. 학예사 발행 ≷증보조선소설사≸(1939년) 이제까지 <조선소설사> 연구는 주로 ≷증보조선소설사≸를 대상으로 이루어져왔으나, 필자는 이 논문에서 동아일보에 연재한 것을 분석의 대상으로 선택했다. <조선소설사>의 기본 틀은 동아일보 연재에서 확정되었고, 그기조는 1933년 초판 ≷조선소설사≸나 1939년 ≷증보조선소설사≸에서도 크게 변하지 않았다. 필자는 증보판 보다 동아일보 연재나 초판 ≷조선소설사≸가 김태준의 집필 의도를 더 잘 나타내는 것이라고 판단했다. 김태준이 <조선소설사>를 쓸 수 있었던 지식의 바탕은 무엇이었나 하는 점을 알아보기 위해, 김태준이 <조선 소설사>를 쓸 때 참고한 자료는 무엇 이고, 이를 어떤 방식으로 이용했는지를 검토했다. 김태준은 자신이 참고한 선행연구의 주된 내용이 무엇인가와는 관계없이 자신에게 필요한 구절만을 가져다 <조선소설사>에서 사용한 것이 많고, 또 자신이 다룬 작품의 내용을 정확하게 파악하지 못한 채로 글을 쓴것도 상당수 있다. 김태준은 소설이라는 장르의 일반적 성격이나 조선시대 한글소설의 특징을 잘 이해하지 못하고 있었다. <조선소설사>는 오랫동안 고소설 연구자들이 반드시 참고해야 하는 책이었으나, 앞으로도 계속 그 내용이나 시각이 유효하리라고 보기는 어렵다.

영문 초록

There are three versions of Kim Taejun’s Joseon soseolsa (History of Joseon Fiction). 1. Article series in Donga ilbo, ‘Joseon soseolsa’ (October 31, 1930 –February 14, 1931) 2. Cheongjin seogwan publication, Joseon soseolsa (1933) 3. Hakyesa publication, Jeungbo Joseon soseolsa (Enlarg ed History of Joseon Fiction) (1939) Until now, most studies of Joseon soseolsa have been based on the reading of the text Jeungbo Joseon soseolsa. In contrast, this article analyzes the work as it appeared serially in the newspaper Donga ilbo. It is in that initial form that the basic foundations of Kim’s ideas were laid down, with few changes to them in Joseon soseolsa of 1933 and the subsequent Jeungbo Joseon soseolsa of 1939. This paper argues that the Donga ilbo text, along with its first book version, best reveals Kim Taejun’s intentions in writing the work. In order to elucidate the basis of the knowledge that allowed Kim Taejun to write Joseon seosola, I examined the material and methodology he utilized in putting the work together. In the course of his research, Kim Taejun, in many cases, not only used selected passages from classical works for his own ends, disregarding their true meanings in their proper literary contexts, but he often analyzed them without comprehending their significance. Kim Taejun never achieved a full understanding of the characteristics of the novel as a genre of writing, nor did he gain a proper perspective on the particular nature of hangeul fiction of the Joseon dynasty. While Joseon soseolsa has been regarded for a long time as the requisite source that has to be consulted for any research on classical fiction, it is unlikely that its contents and perspective will remain relevant in the future.
