루쉰과 량스추의 번역논쟁에 관한 小考

국문 초록

루쉰(魯迅, 1881-1936)과 량스추(梁實秋, 1903-1987)는 1920년대 말부터 1936년까지 번역에 관한 논전을 벌인 것으로 유명하다. 두 사람은 우선 루쉰의 ‘억지번역’이라고도 일컬어지는 ‘경역(硬譯)’에 대해서 열띤 논의를 하다가 그 논쟁의 초점이 문학의 계급성 유무를 밝히는 것으로 옮겨갔다. 또한 두 사람 모두 번역어로서 중국어에 부족한 부분이 있다는 점을 인정한 바, 서구 언어의 문법으로 중국어를 보완할 수 있다고 보았다. 하지만 각자가 주장하는 해결방식은 전혀 달랐다. 루쉰은 평소 혁명가로서의 역할을 자임한 것처럼 중국어 역시 빠른 시일 내에 급진적인 방식으로 개혁하고 아울러 중국인의 사유방식까지도 개혁되기를 바랐다. 이에 반해 량스추는 자신의 인성론에서 강조한 바인 문학은 문학 자체로 기능해야지 어떠한 수단으로서 기능하는 것에 반대한다는 주장에 근거하여 번역 또한 번역 자체로 독자의 이해를 돕는 기능에 충실해 야지 다른 목적을 위해 그것이 변용되는 것을 원치 않았다. 본고에서는 두 사람의 번역논쟁을 통해 이와 같은 각각의 번역관이 어떤 방식으로 투영되어 있는지 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

Lu Xun (1881-1936) and Liang Shi-Qiu (1903-1987) are famous for their discussion on translations from the late 1920s to 1936. The two first had a heated discussion on Lu Xun s ‘rigid translation’, and the focus of the discussion has shifted to revealing the presence or absence of class of literature. Lu Xun used a very stubborn translation method of rigid translation to achieve the purpose called enlightenment, and Liang Shi-Qiu regards this Lu Xun s rigid translation as an excuse to conceal his inability. Thus, Lu Xun criticizes Liang Shi-Qiu s writings and poses a problem of his class. On the other hand, recognizing that there is a shortage in Chinese as a translation language, both of them thought that the grammar of Western languages could complement Chinese. However, the solution that each of them claimed was totally different. Just as Lu Xun had always played a role as a revolutionist, he hoped that Chinese would be reformed in a radical way in a short period of time and even the Chinese way of thinking would be reformed. On the contrary, like the claim that literature emphasized in his personality theory should function as literature itself, not functioning as any means, Liang Shi-Qiu argued that the translation itself must be faithful to the function of helping the reader s understanding and did not want it to be changed for other purposes. In conclusion, a variety of critical mind caused by the translation debate of the two people can be said to have a lot of implications for today s literary world.
