여성의 난임 경험에 관한 현상학적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 난임이라는 현상을 난임여성 당사자들이 어떻게 경험하는지, 그리고 난임 체험 중에 사회적 지지 체계와 어떻게 상호작용을 경험하는지에 대해 질적 연구 방법을 통해 살펴봄으로써 난임여성을 위한 사회복지적 지원에 필요한 근거자료를 제공하기 위해 수행되었다. 이를 위해 최근 10년 이내에 난임 체험이 있는 기혼여성 6명의 체험담을 수집하여 기술적(descriptive) 현상학적 연구방법인 Giorgi의 연구방법에 따라 분석하였다. 연구결과, ‘당연한 기다림’, ‘걱정되는 기다림’, ‘현실과 마주함‘, ’나의 세상이 달라짐’, ‘다시 나와 마주함’이 도출되었으며, 이를 관통하는 현상은 ‘기다림과 만남’, ‘자기 자리에서 사회적 정체성 만들기’이었다. 즉, 난임 체험 중에 여성들은 출산에 우호적인 이데올로기(pronatalism)와 가부장주의 및 현대 보조생식술이 야기하는 난임의 의료화(medicalization)에 영향을 받으며, 사회적 맥락 안에서 사회적 행위자로서 자신의 환경에 대응하면서 사회적 정체성을 지속적으로 조정해나가고 있었다. 본 연구결과를 바탕으로 난임여성에 대한 사회적 차원의 지지는 난임과 난임 여성에 대한 시각을 전환하는 데에서 출발해야 함을 제언하였다. 그러한 사회적 노력은 난임을 포함한 사회문제들을 모든 사회구성원의 복리증진의 관점에서 접근할 것을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This qualitative study aims to explore the distinguishing features of social interaction of the women while experiencing infertility. To investigate the unique interactions between infertile women and their social support systems, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with the six consented women, aged under fifty, who have ever experienced infertility within ten years. The experiences of the participants were analyzed through Giorgi’s phenomenological method, and the five categories were as follows: ‘Natural waiting’, ‘Anxious waiting’, ‘Facing the reality’, ‘Being in the infertile world’, and ‘Facing with oneself again’. The core phenomenon is ‘Waiting for meeting’, that is ‘Building up social identity on one’s perch’. These findings show that infertile women’s experiences are socially constructed as pronatalism, patriarchy, and the medicalization of infertility exert their influences on the social context of infertile women. In that contextual situations, infertile women are adjusting and reestablishing their identities. Implications for clinical practice, social policy, and future research are subsequently discussed.
