효봉, 보조 계율사상의 계승과 발전

국문 초록

본 연구를 통해 본 효봉(曉峰, 1888-1966)은 간화선 수행자일 뿐만 아니라 계율을 철저히 지키는 율사(律師)였다. 이에 그의 삶과 사상을 보면, 보조국사 지눌의 영향이 지대했음을 알 수 있다. 이는 효봉의 법명이 고봉 원명에서 효봉 학눌(學訥), 즉 ‘지눌을 배우다’로 개명한 기연에서도 알 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 효봉이 송광사 삼일암(三日庵)에 주석하면서 보조의 목우가풍(牧牛家風)과 정혜쌍수(定慧雙修)의 선풍(禪風)을 재현하고자 제2정혜결사운동을 일으킨 것에서도 잘 알 수 있다. 그러나 두 결사를 비교해 보면, 보조의 정혜결사가 다소 수동적, 은둔적이라면, 효봉의 제2정혜결사는 능동적, 적극적인 결사라 할 수 있다. 이러한 차이는 효봉이 처한 당시의 한국불교의 현실에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다. 즉 조선의 억불정책과 일제강점기의 왜색불교로 인해 한국불교의 존립자체가 위협받던 시기였기 때문일 것이다. 이것은 효봉이 보조의 정혜결사정신을 계승해서 자신의 시대적 상황에 맞게 발전시킨 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 효봉은 삼학(三學)에 있어서도 보조의 삼학에 큰 영향을 받았다. 보조의 삼학은 곧 육조(六祖) 혜능(慧能)의 삼학을 전승 및 발전시킨 것으로, 효봉의 삼학은 두 스승의 삼학을 자신의 방식으로 계승 및 발전시킨 것이라 할 수 있다. 특히, 효봉은 계율을 ‘집터’로 비유함으로써 계율이 보다 근본적인 의의를 갖는 것임을 밝히고 있다. 정혜결사의 이념에 대한 이해사(理解史) 속에서 계학은 너무나 오랫동안 외면되어 왔지만, 효봉 만큼은 보조의 결사정신이 계학(戒學)에 뿌리를 두고 있음을 알고 있었다. 더욱이 효봉은 단지 이해에만 그치지 않고 제2정혜결사, 종단정화운동 등을 주도함으로써 당시의 타락한 한국불교를 혁파하고자 했다.

영문 초록

Through the this study, it is possible to identify venerable Hyobong(曉峰, 1888-1966) was the practitioner of the phrase-observing meditation(看話 禪) as well as the master of the rules of the discipline. Not only to this, the study enables us to know that Buddhist national teacher Bojo Jinul(普照 智訥, 1158-1210) was the one who most affected Hyong. This is largely because his dharma name was changed into Hyobong Haknul(曉奉 學訥), which means ‘learn from the venerable Bojo Jinul’ from Unbong Wonmyeong(雲峰 元明). Furthermore, while staying at the Samil hermitage(三日庵) of the Songgwang temple(松廣寺), Hyobong led the second movement of samādhi and prajñā society(定慧結社) to reenact the cowherd (a metaphor for the task of bringing the mind to awakening) family tradition(牧 牛家風) of Bojo and to reawaken the Chan style(禪風) of dual practice of meditation and wisdom(定慧雙修). However, in comparison with the first movement, the second which Hyobong guided was different: while the first movement of samādhi and prajñā society of Bojo was slightly passive and seclusive, the movement of Hyobong was active and aggressive. Such a difference was attributed to the reality of Korean Buddhism at that time when Hyobong had practiced. In other words, Korean Buddhism was threatened not only by the policy of suppressing Buddhism in the Joseon Dynasty period but also by Japanese style Buddhism during Japanese colonial era. Therefore, Hyobong needed to succeed to the spirit of the movement of Bojo by adjusting it in accordance with his time and situation. In addition, with regards to the three disciplines(三學), Hyobong followed the teaching of sixth patriarch Huineng(慧能, 638-713) to develop the doctrine of three disciplines of Bojo. Hyobong, in particular, used an expression ‘a site for a house’ as a metaphor for moral restraints and rules of discipline(戒律) to clarify the fundamental meaning of discipline itself among the three disciplines. The discipline by the precepts has been disregarded among the three disciplines for a long time. However, it was not until he started the second movement that it was possible to know the spirit of the movement of Bojo was rooted in the discipline by the precepts. Moreover, taking the lead in the second samādhi and prajñā movement and the religious order movement for purification, Hyobong had aimed at reforming Korean Buddhism at that time.
