완주 송광사의 창건 배경 및 조선후기 불교 문파와의 관계

국문 초록

완주 송광사는 본래 전주 동북쪽 청량산에 있던 圓巖寺의 승려들이 1622년에 자신들의 사찰이 불탄 것을 계기로 근처에 새로운 사찰을 창건함으로써 성립되었다. 이들은 새로운 사찰터가 옛날 고려의 보조국사 지눌이 사찰을 창건하려던 곳이라고 주장하면서 새로운 사찰 창건의 정당성을 확보하고자 하였고, 사찰의 낙성에 즈음하여서는 전라도 관찰사에게 요청하여 명망 높은 의승장이자 지눌이 주석했던 순천 송광사와 인연이 있는 부휴계의 대표적 고승 碧巖覺性을 초빙하여 사찰의 위상을 높이려 하였다. 마침 새로 축조된 무주 적상산성과 史庫의 수호 책임자로 임명되었던 벽암각성은 부담스러운 임무를 맡는 대신에 새로 창건한 승려들의 요청을 받아들여 송광사로 옮겨와 주석하며 새 사찰의 발전을 주도하였다. 문도들과 함께 들어와 본존불의 봉안을 주도하고 사찰의 낙성 행사로 대규모의 화엄법회를 거행하여 신흥 사찰 송광사의 위상을 높였다. 아울러 중앙의 고위 인사들에 부탁하여 새 사찰의 창건과 자신의 주석 사실을 기록한 개창비를 건립함으로써 송광사가 중앙에까지 인정될 수 있도록 하였다. 벽암각성을 초빙한 송광사 승려들은 자발적으로 벽암각성의 문도가 되었고, 송광사는 벽암각성이 속한 부휴계의 거점 사찰 중 하나로 자리 잡았다. 1642년 벽암각성이 떠난 후에도 송광사는 부휴계의 주요사찰로 기능하였지만 18세기에 들어와 새롭게 청허계의 영향력이 대두하였다. 전주 출신으로 송광사에서 출가하였던 無竟子秀는 젊은 시절 청허계의 秋溪有文에게 嗣法한 후 청허계의 계승자를 자처하였고, 그의 영향력이 강해진 1734년에는 청허계 고승들의 진영이 송광사에 봉안되었다. 이후 송광사는 기존의 부휴계 전통과 새로운 청허계 법맥이 공존하게 되었지만 무경자수의 문도들이 번성하는 가운데 청허계의 위상이 더 높아졌던 것으로 보인다. 이처럼 송광사가 조선후기 불교계 양대법맥의 결절점적인 성격을 띠는 가운데 18세기 후반 조선 불교계의 법맥을 종합적으로 정리하고자 한 『서역중화해동불조원류』가 이곳에서 편찬, 간행되게 되었다.

영문 초록

After Wonamsa temple in the northeast of Jeonju, the capital of Jeolla-do province, was burnt down in 1622, the monks who have resided there started to build a new temple near it. They named it Songgwangsa arguing that they just fulfilled the prophecy of the famous Goryeo dynasty Seon[Zen] master Jinul who dropped by the place and made a mark for a wonderful temple site in the future when wandering all the country before he settled down at Songgwangsa in Suncheon. They also tried to invite the famous patriotic monk-general and Seon[Zen] master Byeogam Gakseong who resided at the Songgwangsa in Suncheon and led the Buhyu school to secure the prestige for their new temple. They asked the provincial governor to order Byeogam Gakseong just appointed as the general manager of a newly built mountain castle for the protection of Dynasty Records in the Jeolla province to move to the new temple as a leader. Following the request Byeogam Gakseong moved to the new temple with his disciples and completed the foundation of it. He presided the enshrinement ceremony of the main Buddha statue and hold the Huayan sutra lecture commemorating it for 50days. The indigenous monks respected him as their master and the new Songgwangsa was regarded as one of the important temples of Buhyu school. Though he returned to Sanggyesa in Jiri mountain, his main temple, in 1642, Byeogam Gakseong maintained the relation with the new temple in Wanju and its monks. It remained as a foothold of Buhyu school during 17th century. But in the 18th century the influence of Cheongheo school, the rival of Buhyu school and most influential Seon lineage in late Joseon dynasty, infiltrated Songgwangsa in Wanju. Mugyeong Jasu, native of Jeonju and ordained at Songgwangsa, had learned under Chugye Yumun of Cheongheo school and established his identity as a successor of the school. Becoming the influential senior of the temple in 1730s, he made the portraits of the eminent monks of the school enshrined in Songgwangsa. Since then the influence of Cheongheo school became stronger in the temple. It must have been because of this special character of this temple that the Seoyeok junghwa haedong buljo wonryu (the Lineage of Indian, Chinese and Korean Patriarchs), the genealogy of Seon monks which cherishes the tradition of both the Buhyu and the Cheongheo school was edited and printed there.
