국문 초록

시간을 거슬러 올라갈수록 자연에 대한 인간의 경외감, 공포감이 깊었던 것으로 드러나며 하늘은 물론 땅도 인간의 길흉화복을 재단하는 요소라는 인식이 바탕이 되어 풍수관념이 자리잡게 된다. 그것은 중세시기 삶을 지배하는 한 요소가 되다시피 했다. 원시인들의 사고에 가깝다 할 풍수관은 적어도 신라 말부터 한국인의 사유체계에 큰 영향을 끼쳤으며 불가에서도 피할 수 없는 관념이 되었던 것이다. 승려, 불자 사이에서도 땅의 기운을 살피지 않고 아무데나 절을 지으면 흉한 일에 봉착할 수 있다는 두려움에서 자유롭지 못했다. 그런데 그와 반대의 경우도 생겼다. 다시 말해 사람들에게 액운을 가져오고 불행이 닥치게 하는 터라 할지라도 절을 세우고 신불에 정성을 다한다면 흉한 일을 방비할 수 있다는 사고가 생긴 것인데 이는 불가에서 발원한 것으로 파악된다. 본고에서 논의대상으로 택한 호압사는 이른바 사찰풍수 관념을 엿볼 수 있는 대표적인 사례이다. 조선 초부터 특이한 형세를 갖춘 호암산에 대해 갖가지 이설과 전설이 따라다녔는데 이는 시인과 문인들 사이에 흥미로운 소재가 되었다. 성리학적 시각을 앞세운 문인들은 풍수적 해석을 무지의 소치라 했으며 민중들은 풍수를 따져 절을 짓는 것이야말로 한양과 백성이 평안해지는 길이라 맹신했던 것으로 나타난다. 물론 풍수 관심대신 호암산, 호압사를 유람하면서 그 산과 절의 풍광을 전하는 작품들도 적지 않은 것으로 나타난다. 호압사, 호암사를 소재로 한 시, 서사시, 산문, 전설들을 전체적으로 살펴볼 때, 담당주체에 따라 자연과 지형을 보는 시각이 퍽 달라지고 있음이 밝혀진다. 특히 불가에서는 풍수관념을 수용하되 창사, 축탑 등의 불사야말로 악한 터를 좋은 터로 전변시키는 단초가 된다는 점을 강조하는 쪽에 무게를 두고 풍수관련 담론을 생산했음이 드러난다. 호압사 창건의 이면에서 우리는 악지를 부처의 힘으로 비보한다는 사찰 풍수 고유의 관념을 읽어낼 수가 있다.

영문 초록
