국문 초록

조지 오웰의 소설『1984』에 등장하는 어용 언어학자 사임의 ‘언어혁명’라는 표현이 실상은 ‘언어 독재’의 실체를 은연중에 드러낸 것이라는 전복적인 뒤집기의 역발상에서 이 글은 처음 구상되었다. 이 첫 발상은 만일 전체주의 지배 체제의 언어와 권력의 함수관계가 어떠했는지를 알게 된다면, 이 특수한 정치 체제의 언어 독재적 면모를 제대로 파악할 수 있겠다는 확신으로 이어졌다. 그런데 이른바 ‘언어의 독재, 독재의 언어’라는 주제를 본격적으로 연구하려면 적절한 연구 방법론이 필수적이라는 학문적 부담감은 자연스럽게 독재시대의 언어의 문화사적 연구 방법론을 독자적으로 창안할 필요성이 있다는 데까지 나가게 했다. 이러한 독자적인 탐구 과정을 통해 독재시대의 언어의 문화사를 위한 시론적 성격이 탄생하게 되었다. 이 글에서는 먼저 독재언어의 문화사적 연구이론의 정립을 위해 세 편의 선행연구를 비판적으로 검토했고, 그런 다음 독재시대의 언어의 문화사를 위한 연구방법의 주요 특징을 이른바 ‘개념의 사회사’와의 비교를 통해 일목요연하게 정리했다. 마지막으로 나치독재 시대의 대표적인 히틀러언어였던 ‘히틀러경례법’의 작동 방식을 분석하여 독재시대의 언어의 문화사의 새로운 가능성을 사학사적인 측면에서 타진해보았다. 그 결과, 필자가 제시한 독재시대의 언어의 문화사적인 연구 방법론이 동료 연구자들에 의해 적절하게 활용되기만 한다면 언어문화 독재에 대한 새로운 문화사 연구를 위한 초석이 될 수도 있지 않을까 하는 기대감을 갖게 되었다.

영문 초록

When I read the famous novel 1984, written by George Owell, this article was started to firstly framed into the actual idea. In his novel, one linguist, named Saim, considered the totalitarian English socialism as language revolution, but his linguistic revolution theory gave me reversely re-thinking of the nature of the totalitarian regime, expecially including the Nazi regime. Which could be the nature of the totalitarian dictatorship? Could its nature investigating work be remained not only on the political, economical, and social dimension, but be enlarged into the cultural one? If it is possible, the Nazi regime can be explained actually as the linguistic dictatorship, which had great tactics to utilize the language tools in order to rule over the people mass totally. In this meaning, a new methodological research is needed to reveal the cultural nature of the totalitarian language dictatorship. First, this article examined critically into the existing theoretical works, Roland Barthes, Kim Jong Yong, Victor Klemperer. Especially Victor Klemperer s words - LTI ist die Sprache des Massenfanatismus - became a cornerstone to shed lights on the real aspects of the language dictatorship under the Nazi regime. His theoretical position suggested that the research should be above all under the perspective of the oppressed people. A new method of a cultural history of language has to be founded on his outstanding insight. Second, while comparing to the concept history as a method, this article concluded that a new cultural historical method should be needed in order to investigate into not the surface, but the depth of the linguistic dictatorship. The limits of the concept history, which has tendencies to be slanted on the structural functions of the concept in the historical dimension, can be coped with this new method. This new method can make it possible to study the complex movements of the dictatorship languages in some social and cultural phases particularly under the perspective of the language consumers. In this meaning Hitler s Salute gave a good example to confirm new possibilities of the cultural history of the language dictatorship. Frankly speaking, this article is only a new beginning, but the value of this new methodological research depends on the concrete and successful cultural historical studies of the social mechanism of the power languages under the totalitarian dictatorship system. Then I hope that this work should give us a good chance to shift a viewpoint from spoken language to diverse political languages, from individual languages to its social contexts, from the upper-down to the bottom-up perspective.
