국문 초록

본 연구에서는 일연이 『삼국유사』를 찬술하게 된 배경과 기반에 대해 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 자료의 세밀한 분석과 검토를 통하여 기초적인 측면을 중시하였다. 그 결과 크게 다음의 몇 가지로 정리 할 수 있다. 첫째, 일연은 사서를 찬술할 정도로 학문적 능력을 갖추고 있었다. 그는 불교를 비롯하여 유학과 제자백가에 능통하여 사서를 찬술할 수 있는 자질을 갖추었다. 특히 그는 사물을 대하는 치밀한 태도와 고증하는 능력을 갖춘 인물로 평가된다. 둘째, 일연은 무엇보다도 남해에서 대장경 조판에 참여함으로써 폭넓은 자료를 접할 수 있었다. 그리고 일연은 당시 시대상황에서 무신세력과 몽고를 가장 비판적으로 인식하면서 시대정신이 싹트게 되었다. 셋째, 일연이 인흥사에 주석하면서 크게 고민한 것은 ‘민족’의 정체성 위기를 극복하는 것과 민중들의 피폐된 삶을 개선하는 문제였다. 이에 대한 대응은 사서의 찬술과 관음신앙의 강조로 나타났다. 그리고 인흥사에서 일연이 제작한『역대연표』는 사서를 찬술하는 과정에서 ‘연표’의 기능을 하였다. 넷째, 일연은 고려사회의 내부 변화와 대외관계를 파악하면서, 국가·국왕 중심의 역사관과 단군으로부터 민족사의 체계를 정립하려고 하였다. 결국 일연은 궁극적으로는 고려를 再造하려는 역사의식을 가졌으며, 이를 실천하기 위한 노력이 『삼국유사』의 찬술로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This paper surveys the historical background of the compilation of Iryeon s Saumgukyusa. A variety of factors and circumstances in which he set out to do the project is deduced from the detailed examination of historical materials. Firstly, with his susceptibility to elaborate research Iryeon s profound knowledge of Buddhism, Confucianism, and all kinds of ancient Chinese philosophy qualified him to take on the historical works. Secondly, the production of the Goryeo Tripitaka in which Iryeon involved himself while he was staying in Namhae enabled him to gain access to historical materials. His critical attitude towards the Goryeo military regime and Mongols marked his worldview as a whole. Thirdly, during his sojourn in Inheungsa Iryeon was deeply concerned about the dissolution of the concept of ‘nation’ and aggravated living conditions which the Goryeo people had encountered. This spurred him on to the publication of his historical work and provoked the belief in Avalokitesvara. And Yeokdaeyeonpyo that produced by Iryeon in Inheungsa performed a function of a chronological table in the compilation of historical works. Lastly, while seeing changes both in Goryeo society and its relations with other countries, royal-national historiography in which national origin was traced back to the legend of Dangun provided a key framework for his historical study. Based on this narrative, he expressed the hope for rebuilding Goryeo. This was manifest in his Samgukyusa.
