국문 초록

마크 트웨인은 오랫동안 평가 절하되어 왔던 그의 후기 소설 두 탐정 이야기에서 코난 도일의 셜록 홈즈와 동시대의 탐정 소설이 만들어 내어 온 사회적 환상을 파기하고 조롱한다. 도일의 홈즈를 포함한 탐정들은 사회 혼란과 무질서에 대한 합리적 설명을 제시할 수 있는 영웅으로서 여겨지고, 그러한 탐정의 역할을 통해 탐정소설은 일상의 경험에서 일어나는 불안을 감추는 통로가 되어 왔다. 본 연구는 자크 라캉의 환상이론과 이에 대한 슬레이보 지젝의 해석을 바탕으로 탐정소설과 탐정을 통해 사회적 오점을 수정하는 환상을 어떻게 반복적으로 재생산하고 있는지 분석하고, 그러한 욕망을 폭로하여 조롱하는 트웨인의 서술과정을 살펴보고자 한다. 트웨인은 두 탐정 이야기 에서 홈즈를 욕망과 자만심에 가득 찬 사기꾼으로, 또 다른 탐정 아치 스틸만은 사냥개적 감각으로 문제를 해결하고 자신을 위해 진실을 은폐하는 탐정으로 그려냄으로써, 탐정을 텅 빈 환상구조로 조롱한다. 뿐만아니라 독자들이 감추어진 진실, 즉 사회적 불합리와 공포 자체를 직시하도록 이끌어, 사회와 구성원의 마음에 깊이 뿌리내린 환상구조를 횡단하고 폭로한다.

영문 초록

With Mark Twain’s “A Double-Barreled Detective Story,” this study aims to elucidate Twain’s criticism of social fantasy that Sherlock Holmes and detective stories create. Readers have accepted Holmes as a hero capable of solving any social problems on the basis of rational explanation for chaos and disorder in society. So the narratives become a magical gateway that conceals anxieties that readers experience in daily lives. In use of Jacques Lacan’s theory of fantasy and Slavoj Zizek’s interpretation, the essay analyzes how readers repeatedly produce fantasies that social flaws are always fixed through detective-heroes and how Twain exposes and burlesques such desire by presenting two different detectives: Archy and Holmes. Twain not only satirizes the mystified role of a wonderful detective as an empty fantasy structure but also educates readers to realize the bare truth that has been concealed—social injustice and anxieties caused by them. Twain boldly traverses and deconstructs the fantasy structure deeply seated in the minds of people.
