국문 초록

본 논문은 한국에서 이루어지고 있는 디지털인문학에 관한 논의를 서구, 특히 영미 학계와의 비교를 통해 비판적으로 검토하면서 그 성과와 한계, 현실을 점검하고, 과제와 대안을 제시하고자 한다. 디지털인문학은 단순히 인문지식을 디지털 기술과 접목하는 데 머물기보다는 디지털 기술로 인문학의 창조성과 현실성을 부활하고, 인문학 정신으로 디지털 문명을 변화시키려는 시도로서 기존 인문학의 대안으로 등장하였다. 그것은 본질적으로 공유와 협업, 자율과 창의를 핵심으로 하는 비상업적, 반독점적, 탈권위적 인문 실천이다. 한국의 디지털인문학은 여전히 맹아적 단계에 있긴 하지만 매우 독특한 특징을 띤 채 전개되고 있다. 특히 두드러진 특징은 디지털인문학에 관한 논의가 주로 인문콘텐츠라는 한국적인 담론틀 안에서 이루어져 문화산업의 상업적 논리에서 벗어나지 못한다는 점이다. 이는 한국의 디지털인문학이 공유와 자율의 정신에 충실하기보다는 상업적 이익과 문화 권력의 요구에 종속되는 상황으로 이어질 가능성을 높이고 있다. 이는 인문학을 회생하기보다는 그 위기를 더욱 강화하는 결과로 이어질 것이다. 인문학이 희망과 지속가능성의 학문으로 재탄생하기 위해서는 한국의 디지털인문학은 개방과 공유 정신에 보다 충실해야 한다.

영문 초록

This paper critically examines the short but remarkable history of the digital humanities in Korea, and reveals its achievements, limitations, and realities by comparing it with the digital humanities in the West, especially in the United States. Digital humanities is not simply a combination of humanistic knowledge with digital technology. It emerged as an attempt to revive the creative relevance of the humanities with digital technology and to transform the digital civilization with humanistic values, facing the unprecedented crisis of the established institutional humanities. It is basically a non-commercial, anti-authoritarian humanistic practice that cherishes the values of openness, collaboration, autonomy, and creativity. The digital humanities in Korea is still in a germinal stage and yet evolving with distinctively unique characteristics. One salient feature is that discussion on digital humanities is largely confined to the so-called “humanistic contents” and thus inevitably intertwined with the commercial logic of the culture industry. Korean digital humanities is likely to be subjected to the commercial interests and political demands of the culture industry. This will intensify the crisis of the humanities rather than revitalize the humanistic values. Digital humanities should be more faithful to the spirits of open source and creative commons to advocate and refashion the humanities as the discipline of hope and sustainability.
