만주국과 교황청

국문 초록

1932년 3월 1일 출현해 1945년 8월 18일 홀연히 사라진 국가 만주국. 불과 13년 5개월의 짧은 역사라도 엄연한 국가였다. 그러나 지금까지의 만주국에 대한 연구는 만주국 역사의 전모를 모두 조명했다 볼 수 없다. 만주사변이나 중일전쟁 같은 개별 사건과의 연관성 안에서, 또는 주변 국가들과 얽혀있는 경우에 한해 부분적으로만 연구되었을 뿐이다. 거의 알려지지 않은 부분은 또한 당시 만주국 내의 교회의 실상이다. 기존의 역사는 대체로 1934년 교황청과 만주국과의 외교관계 수립을 사실로 받아들이고 있는 입장이나 교황청은 이에 대해 지금까지 그 어떤 입장도 표명하지 않았다. 그러나 정식 외교관계 수립 여부를 떠나 교황청과 만주국이 실제적인 관계를 맺어왔다는 그 사실 자체는 부정될 수 없는 것이다. 따라서 이 관계의 실상에 대한 연구는 비단 외교관계 수립이라는 법리적 실체의 파악만이 아니라, 당시 동아시아 교회에 짙게 드리워진 제국주의 국가권력들과 교회가 어떤 방식으로 조우했는지 살필 수 있는 교회사적 의미를 지닌다. 이를 통해 우리는 20세기 초엽부터 적극적으로 실행되던 교황청의 동아시아 선교정책이 제국주의와 전체주의, 식민통치와 전쟁과 같은 20세기 동아시아 특수 상황에서 얼마나 실효성 있게 전개되었는지, 또한 16세기부터 18세기까지 식민통치와 깊이 얽혀있던 해외선교의 양태를 고려할 때 당시 교회가 자신의 의지와 비교해 얼마만큼 선교의 순수성을 회복했는지 살필 수 있는 단초를 확보할 수 있을 것이다. 나아가 이 연구는 비단 민족주의와 제국주의에 대한 교회의 입장과 태도에 대한 규명만이 아니라 국가와 교회라는 영원한 난제에 대한 성찰이기도 하다. 어떤 형태로건 국가는 교회생활과 밀접한 관계를 맺을 수밖에 없고 그 관계의 형태가 결국 현실 교회의 자기이해를 반영하기 때문이다.

영문 초록

The State of Manchuria(Manchukuo) has established on March 1st, 1932 and disappeared suddenly on August 18th, 1945. Even though it lasted only 13 years 5 months, Manchuria has been a solemn state. The study on Manchukuo until now didn’t seem to light up its whole aspects. It was partially studied only about the relationships of individual occurrence such as the Manchuria(Mukden) Incident, China and Japan war and surrounded countries. Also, rarely known part is the real conditions of the Church in Manchuria. The existing historic point of view mostly accepted the establishment of diplomatic relations between Manchuria and Roman Curia as a fact, but Roman Curia hasn’t expressed any opinion about that. But besides the formal diplomatic relation establishment, it cannot be denied the fact that Manchuria and Roman Curia actually had relationship. Hence, the study on this real fact of these relations has meaning to find out not only the judicial fact of diplomatic relation and also how the Church deal with the imperial national authority in the Eastern Asia Church. Through this, we could have threshold of how effectively the Roman Curia’s Eastern Asia mission policy has developed in the 19th century Eastern Asia’s special conditions. From the early 20th century, Roman Curia positively acted with Imperialism, Totalitarianism, Colonialism and War. And also, considered with foreign mission condition which was deeply related with colonialism from the 16th century to the 18th century, here we could searched how the Church restored the purity of foreign mission compare to her original intention. This study is not just look into the Church’s position or attitude toward nationalism and imperialism. But also it is the consideration of eternally unsolved problem between the State and the Church. No matter of what form of state is, State has to have close relation with the Church. Such a form eventually reveals the Church’s self-understanding.
