영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to suggest how to overcome problems arising in English/Korean simultaneous interpretation due to time lag and the syntactic differences between the two languages. To overcome the problems, simultaneous interpreters may use various strategies such as segmentation, progressive interpretation, omission of unnecessary parts, change of long expressions to short ones, and taking advantage of pauses, etc. Those may be useful to reduce the problems. However, they are not effective enough to completely get rid of time lag and the problems it causes, since it is one of the characteristics inherent in simultaneous interpretation. I suggest that the problems can be overcome when simultaneous interpreters have acquired the ability to listen to a language and speak another at the same time continuously. This ability to perform the dual tasks can be acquired through a great deal of training in appropriate educational programs with various basic qualifications for simultaneous interpreters.
