영문 초록

This paper aims at analysing some topics related to so called ‘vertical translation from the viewpoint of Korean linguistics. Four topics have been discussed. While it is generally accepted that the third personal pronoun ‘geu(그)’ in Korean has widely been used in the latter part of the 20th century, it is neither a precise nor desirable line of reasoning to argue that the spread of its usage has directly been related to the vertical translation of English into Korean. The orthography of Korean loanwords, though entering into a part of Korean language norm, could and should be discussed from the viewpoint of translation not to be wide of the target, for it is indeed a translation of pronunciation of foreign words. Ideally speaking, to succeed in the horizontal or equal translation, efficient translators good at both source language and target or their native language should participate in the actual work. For this sake, mutual cooperation between foreign language adepts and Korean linguists should be encouraged. It should be reoriented to assert that the history of Korean is no longer than 100 years. It could date from the middle part of the 15th century at least. In this context it is very important and significant to interpret and estimate the meaning of many translated texts from that time from the viewpoint of modern translation science. Concludingly, it is time that the productive cooperation of three parts, translators and translation scholars and Korean linguists should be incarnated into a concrete aspect.
