<홍계월전>의 군담 변이와 이본 분화의 상관성

국문 초록

이 글은 <홍계월전>의 군담 변이와 이본 분화의 상관성을 탐구한 것이다. 이를 위해 초기본의 면모를 지닌 단국대 96장본의 군담을 후대 이본들의 군담과 대비적으로 검토하였다. <홍계월전>은 창작 당시부터 군담을 중심으로 부분적인 결함을 지닌 것으로 보인다. 하지만 후대로 전승되는 과정에서 이런 모순을 인식한 독자들의 적극적인 개입에 의해 군담과 결말에서 다채로운 변이가 나타나게 되었다. 그 변이는 장편 계열 내에 국한되지 않고 장편의 단편화와 단편 계열에까지 수반됨으로써 새로운 이본의 분화를 촉진하였다. <홍계월전>은 장편 계열이 먼저 생성되었다. 처음에 초기본의 군담 1ㆍ2ㆍ3을 ‘지속’한 단국대 96장본 유형이 단선적으로 전승되다가, 초기본의 공통적 결함을 보완하기 위해 군담 4를 별도로 설정하여 기존 군담을 ‘확대’한 단국대 103장본 유형이 생성되었다. 그리고 이와는 별도로 장편 계열에서 단편 계열이 파생되기도 하였다. 단편 계열은 장편 계열에서 군담 1ㆍ2만 남기고 나머지를 ‘생략’한 한중연 45장본 유형과, 남겨진 군담 1ㆍ2에서 군담 2를 ‘변개’한 단국대 38장본 유형으로 분화되었다. 수집된 이본을 근거로 삼을 경우 네 유형 가운데 ‘단국대 96장본 유형’과 ‘한중연 45장본 유형’이 각기 장편 및 단편 계열의 주류를 형성한 것으로 추정된다. 따라서 향후 <홍계월전>의 이본 논의는 장편 계열에서 단편 계열로의 이행을 기반으로 삼되, 본고에서 수립한 네 유형을 중심으로 이들의 얽힘과 개별 이본들의 변별성을 확보해 나가는 쪽으로 이루어져야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the relationship between the variation of military story in Honggyewoljeon and the generation of its different versions. For this purpose, this paper compared the military story of the 96-piece edition of Dankuk University that shows the aspects of the early version with different versions of later era. Since the time of its creation, Honggyewoljeon has been known to have partial defects, mainly in the military story. However, while it was passed down to the later generations, the active intervention of readers who recognized this contradiction led to a variety of variations in the military story and endings. It is assumed that the variation was not limited to long versions but accompanied the transition of long versions to short versions and variations within short versions, prompting the generation and differentiation of new versions. It is presumed that the 96-piece edition of Dankuk University, which ‘retains’ the military story of the early version, was solely passed down, and other later versions-103-piece edition of Dankuk University that ‘expanded’ the military story of the early version, 45-piece edition of the Academy of Korean Studies that ‘left out’ some parts, and 38-piece edition of Dankuk University that ‘altered’ the early version-were created with time gap in between. When considering the collected versions as the base of analysis, it is presumed the 96-piece edition of Dankuk University and 45-piece edition of the Academy of Korean Studies are the mainstream of the long version and short version respectively. Therefore, in the future, the discussions on the different versions of Honggyewoljeon should be based on the four types that have been established in this paper instead of presupposing the lineal transition from long versions to short versions.
