야담 <명화적> 연구

국문 초록

<명화적(明火賊)>은 도적의 두목이 된 어떤 사람에 대한 이야기로, 조선 후기 사회 문제의 단면을 보여주는 한 사건을 일화의 형식으로 기록하면서 형성된 야담이다. 이 야담은 이우성·임형택의 《이조한문단편집》에 수록되면서 널리 알려지게 되었으나, 원전은 《이재난고(頤齋亂藁)》이다. 《이재난고》는 조선 후기의 학자인 이재(頤齋) 황윤석(黃胤錫, 1729-1791)이 평생을 걸쳐 쓴 사적인 일기(日記)를 총칭하는 것인데, 여기에는 야담이라 할 수 있는 것 외에도 필자가 보고, 듣고, 경험하고, 생각하고, 느낀 모든 일들이 다양하게 기록되어 있다. 야담 <명화적>은 실제 일어났던 사건을 기록한 것이라는 점, 필자가 누구이며 어떤 사람인지가 명확하다는 점, 18세기 조선 사회의 모습이 작품에 직접적으로 반영되어 있다는 점 등에서 많은 다른 야담들과 구별되는 특성을 지닌다. 이에 따라 필자인 황윤석에 대한 연구와 더불어 18세기 조선 사회의 모습, 이 이야기를 기록하게 된 배경, 필자의 가치관과 사회를 바라보는 시각 등을 살펴보는 방향으로 연구 내용을 전개하였다. <명화적>은 짧은 분량으로, 전문을 수록하기가 용이하면서도 서사구조와 필자의 평결로 이어지는 글의 짜임이 잘 되어있어서 문학 교육의 텍스트로 활용하기에도 적합한 글이라고 할 수 있다. 이처럼 흥미롭고 유용한 자료를 재발견했다는 점에 본 연구의 의미를 두고자 한다.

영문 초록

Myeong-hwa-jeok (明火賊) is a story about a person who becomes a boss of brigands. The story is a Yadam (a genre of literature) written in an anecdotic way to show an event that reveals a shade of social problems in the late Joseon Dynasty. This Yadam came to receive attention when published in Yijo-Hanmundan-Pyeonjip (李朝漢文短篇集) by Woo-Seong Lee and Hyeong-Taek Yim, but the original text containing the Yadam is Yi-jae-nan-go (頤齋亂藁). Yi-jae-nan-go is a general term of personal journals written by the scholar of the late Joseon Dynasty, Yoon-Seok Hwang (=Yi-jae) during his entire lives (1729 to 1791), where not only Yadams but every thing he saw, heard, experienced, felt and thought was written in various ways. The Yadam Myeong-hwa-jeok is distinct from other Yadams in several respects: that it tells about a real incident; that it is certain who the author is and what he is like; and that what the Joseon society of the eighteenth century was like is directly reflected in the story. Accordingly, this study researched the author Yoon-Seok Hwang and then explored other aspects including life scenes of the Joseon society in the eighteenth century, the background of this story, and author s values and viewpoint on the society. Myeong-hwa-jeok is considered an appropriate text for literature education because it is short enough to be printed as a whole and has an organized structure consisting of narratives and author s comments. Therefore, it is thought to be meaningful that this study rediscovered a useful and attractive material.
