영문 초록

One of the ways to improve the learner s reading ability is voluntary reading of the learner s favorite English books. But research on the effectiveness of English reading activities emphasizing the self-selectivity of autonomous reading for elementary students is currently rare. It is necessary for the child to learn the strategy of choosing the book that meets his level and interest with the criterion of choosing English books. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of reading self-efficacy and the use of the book selection strategy, bookmatch, in self-selected English book reading activities at the elementary school level. This study collected data from 15 elementary school students (10 females : 5 males) through surveys, book reviews, and interviews. The main findings of the study are as follows: ⅰ) self-selected reading activities positively influenced the participants’ reading self-efficacy, ⅱ) self-selected reading activities improved the participants’ use of the book selection strategy. This study supports the importance of English book-selection strategies, especially at the elementary school level, allowing for the development and consistency of good elementary level English readers. The implications of the findings and the limitations of the study are discussed, and directions for future research are also suggested.
